Frozen Food

looks like angel & butterfly diet will be back in-stock this friday.

with couple of pks of the following will last for a while.
good value:
plankton 8.75oz $4.09/pk
hikari mysis 16oz $6.29/pk

Hey guys Ive never tried the PE Mysis foods. It isnt available at my LFS. Im thinking about placing a large order for frozen food & was wondering if its a big diff between the ocean nutrition Mysis & the PE Mysis.

Do you use the flat packs? I've always stuck with cubes just for consistency but I'm sure I could save some money, I've just got to get over my OCD of the inconsistency of a flat pack.

My plan is to pretty much just buy a pack of everything, I see no issue with variety. On my list now are the three mega-marine varieties, angel/butterfly, bloodworms, spirulina brine, ova, reef plankton, and cyclops. The hikari mysis cubes are mostly water but I could get a flat pack. I hear pe mysis is great but large - I dont have a need for large mysis right now. I'll probably grab some emerald entree and marine cuisine locally too. Locally I can get San Fran Bay "plankton" which is mini krill afaik, but the package is different than the "reef plankton", anyone know if they are the same? Done rambling now haha.

I buy flat packs whenever I can with the exception of the Saltwater Muliti-packs where they come in a roll (cubes) of 2lbs which I can only get from thatpetplace. If I've the Multi-packs on hand I'll use this for a quick feed in the morning.

I've never tried reef plankton so can't comment on that. The SFBB Plankton is in between size of mysis and PE mysis. The larger fish likes PE but no one turns down mysis and angel & butterfly diet. I feed a lot of Marine Cuisine and Emerald Entree as well.

FWIW, I've found running frozen raw cocktail shrimp over a cheese grater makes a great food as well. I'm gonna start using this to help make my regular frozen food purchases last longer.

It's going to end up costing me more money for the frozen food order because I received a $15 gift certificate in the mail today from DFS good on liveaquaria.com till 5/11. :)

Got my order in from DFS last week, it was like christmas morning:

Cold packs arrived solid, all food was still completely frozen. In addition to whats pictured above I picked up some emerald entree, marine cuisine, and cyclopeeze locally. I also got the $15 gift certificate to LA :)

Gotta say, I'm really disappointed in hikari's mega marine line. Very little food packed in mostly water. And most of it floats! I have to use multiple cubes per feeding because of the small portion and whatever doesnt get eaten in the first ~7 seconds goes right back to the water surface and eventually down the overflow.

It's that time again

It's that time again

I've been holding off for 2 months waiting for some sale to come by on frozen food but didn't see any till this morning. Received email from petsolutions dot com about 25% sale on frozen. Very limited selection but found the SF Bay Emerald Entree, Marine Cuisine and Plankton to be good buys.

I blend seafood from the supermarket but like to mix them up with this stuff as well.

roggersreeffood- has replaced every other mix food there is in my case.

Excellent ingredients all fresh and no fillers.

Really good stuff. One of my primary foods including clams, blackworms, two kinds of mysis, capelin fish roe. The best part is that with the mesh feeding the fish can pick for hours which is their natural feeding pattern.

A huge difference. Take a one inch cube of hikari, a one inch cube of PE, melt them and compare the outcome. The other issue is that PE mysis will be readily accepted by some hard to feed animals like leopard wrasses.

I'm in Central Jersey. I buy online twice a year with each time around $150 and that's usually 1/2 the price of the lfs minus the $25 shipping each.

DFS has the best packing & shipping with overnight where others usually 2nd Day.

I buy my frozen food about 2-3 times a year from Aquatic Obsession, they carry both the PE mysis and Rods Food. Don't know about the angel and butterfly.

same here. After finishing my first pack I've decided its the best food out there. I'm a little disappointed with the shipping though. I ordered enough to get the free shipping. It was sent with 2 day service, and even though the weather outside was below freezing, it still arrived defrosted. It was still very cold but it definitely wasn't frozen. Should I contact them about this?

If it wasn't thawed then I wouldn't worry about it. Few years back I'd a pretty large frozen food order from petsolutions that came in thawed during the winter. I sent pictures along with the email they sent complete new order and told me to discard the previous order.

I just received my shipping confirmation from them and the combined weight of the 2 boxes is 28lbs so they must be putting some extra dry ice inside.

I received an email from fosterandsmithaquatics.com 2 days ago that they've frozen food on sale (upto 25% off). Unfortunately PE Mysis is not on sale but most of the other stuff were 10 & 15% off. I received the package today and everything inside was frozen. The food amounted to 8.7lbs and the total package weight was 23lbs so I don't have to tell you how well they pack this with ice packs.

Rogger's food were on sale with 15% off so I got few packs of the complete blend and the plus to try out. Given that the largest size was only 7 oz I would probably go through a pack in less than 3 days if I was feeding exclusive on this. Going to try this food tomorrow morning and see how much love they're going to show me. lol

there is a huge difference between Hikari mysis and PE mysis. I use both, but some fish prefer (e.g. leopard wrasses) PE mysis. Also, the water content of Hikari (high) to PE mysis (very low) is considerable.

That being said, I feed Roggers as one feeding every day. Water content is zero.

Feeding Roggers is different than other foods. I feed in a mesh pouch that the fish pick on rather than thaw and distribute to the water column as with mysis.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'm going to try it. Don't really have anything to order online at the moment so I'll need to find a mesh with magnet in a lfs.

Does anyone know if there's something similar to the one Steve mentioned that's available at lfs? Thanks.

The mesh to protect trees from deer and other animals is a good place to look (1/2 inch diamond openings). I cut a piece, folded it in an 8 inch by 2.5 inch that was 4 inches on a side, bound up two of the 4 sides with zip ties, and attached it to a clip. I hang it with fish leader (to avoid my clean up crew trying to eat it) after stuffing it with Roggers.
