Frozen mysis turn water milky?

Freed

It's what it's
Want to know what brand of frozen mysis shrimp you use and if the frozen mysis itself has ever turned the water that you add to it a milky white color.

Is this normal?

A lot of people will try and decant their frozen food because of phosphates and other useless nutrients found in the water. Id say use a baster to pull out water and add fresh until its clear. My (misguided) roommate uses frozen food and just dumps the whole thing in, she's had a number of cyano and algae problems. I blame the frozen food, motly.

Mysis shrimp, especially high quality brands, contain a lot of fat, oils, and protien that can cloud the water. I use PE Mysis and usually have to decant it with water about 5 or 6 times before the water is clear.

This is Hikari. Sorry for not including that earlier.

I get the same thing with the Hikari. Consider the milky stuff good food for suspension feeders ;)

Was frozen when I got it delivered to me a couple of weeks ago and has been frozen and in deep freezer/freezer ever since. If it's spoiled then it had to have happened before it reached my door step. The order came with no less than 21 frozen ice packs as well. All frozen.

Billsreef, I guess I could look at it that way, hehe. I contacted the on line retailer(one that's very well known on RC and one that always steps up to the plate and man's up when necessary) and they told me it shouldn't do that.

Looks like a good protein shake...
I don't think I've ever had a milky mix like that. But I don't think its spoiled.

Freed,

I get milky water quite often when defrosting the Hikari Mysis, and I pick it up from wholesaler myself. So I know it's good, and still smells good. Well at least good for mysis  I wouldn't worry unless it smelled wrong.

I've been using Hikari frozen mysis and never get that problem. I stick the cube in a small cup. After about 5 minutes I stir and it usually is crystal clear. Then I dump it in the tank.

I tried another brand once and didn't like it. But I don't recall it being milky, just the shrimp were all shreaded. I prefer to have more whole shrimp as do the fish.

Does it smell really bad? If not, I guess it's not spoiled. But I would recommend, like others said, draining out the water until it gets fairly clear. Then feed.

It did smell wrong(billsreef, Hehe) but some things that do smell wrong aren't so bad. After the second/third rinse the water was alot clearer and smells not so wrong. I'll use some more in the next couple of days and see what the next batch does.

If you are using RO/DI (Pure water) to rinse it will probably tend to pull more things into solution. Did you try rinsing with salt water?

It makes no difference if you use fresh water or saltwater. Just decant it until the water is clear.

If you don't decant it you will add more nutrients into the water column and collapse your skimmer foam but it's not going to poison anything.
