FS - Fully automated system

Mad Scientist
After many rewarding years in this hobby with published papers and photos, a funded research project, fun times making custom Ca and Kalk reactors as Coral Science [dot] com for a number of SoCal reefers some years ago, and having made some lasting friends though RC, I have finally decided that after losing my 2 year+ battle with aptasia that I will be getting out to focus on other hobbies.

I know it will be hard to do, at least on RC, but I’m selling everything as an entire system. I will not part it out, take names or make lists, trade or otherwise entertain alternatives to a complete system sale.

The system is nearly completely automated, and has been so for 4 or more years with, most notably, controllable and automated NSW changes. Other than cleaning the skimmer, the system can run unattended for approximately 3 months without intervention. RODI and NSW is pumped from a garage about 90 lineal tubing feet away and the system drains OSW to a sink drain. Ca, ALK, NSW, RODI and waste are all automated. In addition, the system is viewable on the web and reports status by text and email daily. The wonders of Apex!

The system has been very stable for 4 years with no automation failures. The tank was beautiful 2 years ago, but the aptasia has contributed to the death of almost everything in the tank except the fish - very depressing. I thought I had almost won the battle with a CB, but after 9 months as an aptasia killing machine, he just stopped eating and, well…they're back with a vengeance.

In addition to the hardware, there are the following very healthy community oriented LS:

Melanurus wrasse (3-4 years)
Foxface (1 year)
Randall’s shrimp goby (4 years, maybe more)
Candy Basslet (3 years – I think)
Rose BTA (beginning to looked stressed from whatever is going on in the tank)

Here’s a partial list of the hardware:

Custom oak stand
36x36x24 tank – rimless in front, rimmed on the sides. Not Starfire. A couple of minor marks I only notice when cleaning.
Neptune Apex controller with 3 x EB8, 1 xPM2, 2 (aging) pH probes, 1 x conductivity probe
Neptune LunarSim
Foscam wireless and controllable internet camera
Galaxy multi wattage electronic ballast running 250W MH
Via Aqua controllable titanium heaters (though I run them through the Apex
Waterbug
Eheim 1260 main return (spare older body)
Two (2) x TLF Phosban Reactors 150s
Two (2) Ecotech Vortex MP40W powerheads
Skimz skimmer – approximately 1 yo
Various peristaltic pumps for Ca, Kalk, waste dump, etc.

Here’s the remote RO and NSW exchange hardware:

Masterflex and Amicon (very similar lab-grade) peristaltic pumps.
2 spare similar pumps that may or may not be fully operable.
Coral Science Kalk reactor.
Stir plate (old hardware form my lab, but very reliable)
Several flow control solenoids
Two (2) in line flow meters
In line flow regulator
Brute NSW tank
Food industry ~35 g NSW tank
5-stage RO/DI with all new filters. RO membrane is a few years old.

And a bunch of miscellaneous bits and pieces. Items listed are "as best as I can remember" and consider the LS as bonus. You get everything related to the system. It's all used, everything is in good to great shape. MH, pH probes, and RO membranes are limited life items and may need replacement sooner rather than later.

Total system: $2700

You will need to supply tubs, water buckets, truck, helpers etc.

Note that unless you raise Nudibranchs, you will want to sterilize the LR or start with fresh LR/LS.

I don't know if Flickr links are permitted (probably not) but here it is:

If that doesn't work, or get's the thread removed, I'll try to remember how to post with Photobucket.

Oh yeah, PM is the best way to reach me.

Larry, you are one of the very first "friends" I made in this hobby and have always been very generous to me with your time and items I have bought from you. You ARE definitely one of the good ones. Best wishes on your future endeavors. I'm guessing your woodworking. I wish I could buy this. Bump for a top notch system and a top notch gentleman.

I have a filefish that took care of my aptasia issues. if you want, I can lend it to you. I am in upland off 210.

Rik, Thanks. It's a bit woodworking, a bit photography and a lot work. In the end, though, it's been a lot of years and there's just not much joy tending to a struggling tank for several years. I have no doubt I could recover it to what it was just a couple of years ago, but it's time to give it a rest and pass the system along to someone else (younger? ;) )
