am i the only one that thinks of cruelity towards animals

Glass tank? I thought a mantis could crack glass? At LFS they keep them inside plastic containers to keep them from the glass.

I just list this for him. And as for the glass tank the only mantis shrimp that can crack the glass, they have to be well over 6", so for the 2" mantis I don't think he can crag any glass.

For the cruelity, yes I think it cruel but how about people who feed gold fish to the puffer or how about rat that some people feed to snake, is that cruelity?? You ok with that but not ok with feeding a crab to mantis? I see a lot of people feed snail, hermet crab to the mantis all the time? How about what kind of food you feed your fish? clam, squid, shrimp don't they have life too??
That just my openion.
Thanks

i think it was your choice of words saying he put things in the tank to fight the mantis instead of feeding it and that was it's sole purpose. so feeding a fish a fish is one thing, putting a fish together with another animal to fight it is another. do you think dog fights are ok?

anyway, good luck with your sale.

It true, I think I should the wrong word then. But as for the mantis and the dog. In the wild mantis do eat shrimp, crab and fish but I never heard dog eat dog in the wild, are you? So I think if you compare it that way, I don't think you compare it in the same situlation either.

Do he have any pics of that peacock mantis shrimp?BTW your fishs doing super fine in my tank.

dont sweat in gun, everyone will always have their own opinion and so on... good luck with your sale, love those mantis shrimp!!!!

it is cruelity to a degree...i try not to feed live unless it is for the Greater Good...by this i mean...will it get the fish or other animal i am keeping alive long enough so that i can get it to eat frozen/prepared...and can produce like rabbits...ie feeder goldfish, guppies, shrimp, brine shrimp, rats and mice...

i know quite a few people that feed their snakes and large lizards frozen mice and/or rats...

technically if they are frozen...they "did" have a life and curently dont...

the food we eat it all had a life at some point...even if you are a veggitarian
as from the Modern Biology text book written by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston
copyright 2002

Characteristics of Life
All living things are composed of cells.
All living things are highly organized.
All living things use energy in a process called metabolism.
All living things maintain a stable internal condition.
All living things grow as a result of cell division.
and most importanly
All species of organisms have the ability to reproduce.

so if you extend the cruelity of animals to all living things...that would make us all cruel to animals

cruelity of animals in or society is ok to a degree...as long as it helps us survive as a spiecies
and
it is not degrading in any way to the animal...such as dog fighting, **** fighting, betta fighting etc.

I'd be interested in just the mantis as I already have a nano tank setup I have in mind for housing.
I know they get big. I used to have a 6-7 inch peacock mantis in a 15 gal acrylic.

I hate to burst your bubbles but taking living things out of their natural environment in put them into a tiny simulated environment, which is, by the way, not anywhere close to their natural habitats, for your pleasure is considered as unreasonable incarceration and therefore cruel and unusual punishment....

haha i like the tiny simulated enviroment...

that is true...even 1 fish in a 180 is no where close

Here is the pic for the system

it's not cruel.... it's nature, we kill cows to eat them for our survival....same goes for the fishes or other animals

on a similar note, watch my puffer kill a red claw crab, I gave him a crab but the crab went into hiding for a week... but as soon as he went out, my puffer just started destroying him, the vid is right after the crab died:
