Fuge Question

Setting up my fuge and I'm not sure what to put in it. I have sand, and rubble rock, the fuge is pretty small only about 3 gallons on my 36 gallon tank. Should i put in the sand and rubble rock? I plan to have cheato as well. Should I cover the sand completely with rubble rock? Or do I need to keep some sand exposed to the light/current?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Salt.

Being that small i think you need to choose what way to do..

If you are after nitrate reduction and you have the depth do a Deep sand bed only..
If you want to get a pod population and fuge for them .. Do Rock rubble only.
If you want micro algae such as cheato Just drop it in there with none of the above..

Be sure to have a6000k light on a timer . i would run it at night.. If you do DSB NO Light is needed.. I Do deep sand bed in 1 gallon containers in the bottom of my sump. this makes it easier to clean them if need be....

Good Luck

For what its worth with your space the cheato will be your best bet i think.

Thank you! Do you think it would be too much to have the rock rubble and cheato on top? Also does the cheato need to be always moving? I was going to try to make a basket to keep it in its place but not all of it would be moving and maybe not get light. Thoughts?

PS just bought a 10w LED with 6000k. How many hours should I run it?

Tank has been running for a while with 0 nitrates, currently have live sand in the DT.

i USE 20 W LED Flood lights on my fuge
I run them 24/7
It does not have to tumble but i would turn it once in a while.

My Refugium is made from a 55 gallon drum cut down the center from top to bottom Connected together in the middle with Bulk heads.. I Have sand bed and Caulerpa in one Cheato and Mangroves in the other .. separated with egg crate dividers
The cheato one has a hydor 1250 in it aimed at the bottom to keep stuff from settling in there . There are 4 20w 6000k Flood Lights over the tanks.. The get water from my display tank drain at about 300 gph and dump into my sumps Skimmer chamber . Since i installed this much larger fuge my algae scrubber no longer produces anything.. My skimmer works less and less the more the fuge grows out.. A True ecosystem is developing i think But it requires alot of space...
