Fuge Questions

Hi All,

I want to install a small fuge into my sump. I have the room and want to make sure that I do it right. I have cualerpa in there right now with a bit of live rock. My questions are:

1. Do you have to have any type of special light or will a regular flouresent light work from home depot?

2. What should I use? Sand? That mud stuff?

3.I cheato better that caulerpa?

Anything else that im missing? Thanks in advance!

I had poor luck with regular flourescent lights, the home depot specials that is (that ther people use with succes) and went for a 175w 6500K bulb. The macro is growing like mad wilfire now. I would spend the money on a good strong fuge light, go with halide in the right spectrum - 6500k is the best.

I wouldn't use that mud stuff - who knows what's in there and there's a thread floating around somewhere about problems with it and wish they didn't use the mud. If you have sand in the display I would go with live rock rubble. If you run BB then I'd add sand to the refuge.

Both a great macros, but I believe the caulerpa can go sexual and realease toxins destroying your stuff. Instead use cheato to export and maybe some xenia also for export. The chaeto will be good for pods and the like too.

HTH.

get the 6500k 65 watt costco light.. works great .. cheap $10, I use both grape caulerpa and chaeto.. no problem with either, but the tangs will eat caulerpa.

cool thanks guys. I have sand and want to increase pods and export nutrients. So when you say rubble you meand small peices of live rock and no sand or substrate at all? Where can you get the cheato and grape caulerpa from?

Thank you

I have sand rock and small rubble in my tank, good for all, get chaeto, and caulerpa from other reefers... Already seeded.!

put in a mix of both, the smaller critters enjoy the small stuff while the larger like the bigger... I have 2 inch sand in mine with rock and a big pile of rubble for the bigger animals.
