Im thinking about starting a 10g mangrove tank. I was wondering if I could use just plain black dirt on the bottom with like a layer of sand over that to keep it from clouding up too bad. I dont really want to buy miricle mud or anything like that. Are there any big cons to look out for and stay away from using dirt?

Check for threads by if I remember correctly triterium. I think he used potting soil, and even manure in the same manner you describe.
