fun fish for 40 breeder frag tank? perhaps something mean

what would you put in a 40 breeder that has corals but no other fish in it? I was thinking this is my only chance to have a really mean fish. but it has to be reef safe and not too big. any suggestions besides a damsel or a maroon clown?

Dottybacks are a good choice. Six lines and mystery wrasses are mean little guys so they would fit what you want.

Maybe a gramma? They can be mean.

It won't be a mean fish when it's alone, and might even be skidish and hide most of the time.

thanks for all of the great suggestions guys! some really good ideas that I had not considered. I'm also thinking about a maroon clown pair. I could probably sacrifice a corner of the tank for an RBTA (my avatar picture is really old and I miss that combo!).

Rooster waspfish, perhaps- I had one, and they're very personable fish. Or maybe a cockatoo wasp...

I think you could maybe get an antennata lionfish. Really beautiful and reef safe. You could still have a clean up crew.

How about a colored frogfish, or you could do a seahorse tank, or scorpionfish, and last you could probobly get a dwarf angel they arent that mean but they're pretty.

I second some of the above suggestions....a six line wrasse will help clean up any flatworms, etc (tho not sure if this will work if it's BB).

BTA/Clown pair would be nice...plus you could sell/trade the bta clones when they start wandering.
