Did anyone else's first part of the package have 'furry' rocks?

Does this go away?

Actually your rock is fine....that is normal growth.....for my rock...it does not need to brushed, or "cleaned"...as it is alive...

I just got my Part 1 on Wednesday and after the dust settled, noticed a similar thing. After a day it was a lot better, and this morning it seems to have improved some more.

I kind of thought that it was probably the dust settling and it didn't really bother me because it's gotten clearer each of the first couple days. The second day I moved the rocks around again, but now I'm trying to tell myself to leave them alone because I'm going to probably move them around again when Part 2 comes.

When they came, I didn't scrub them or anything, I just shook the rocks that fit, in a 5 gallon bucket with tank water. I'm going to wait and see how it is after my cycle is done and see what it's like when Part 2 comes.

Has it been furry for a few days, or did you just get them in the tank? I'm just curious to whether it has improved at all over a couple days or if they started furry, and have been furry for awhile. Let us know how things work out after brushing them.

Don't scrub the rocks. You will scrub off good stuff with it. That stuff will eventually go away after your done cycling.

Correct!

Correct!

That is very good info!

What you are seeing is ...life....look close with a magnifying glass....the "fur"...is plants, sponges, tube worms, small corals...ext...

One thing you do not want to do to this rock is to 'scrub" it, as that will kill the delicate organisms, and then you will have ammonia problems.

This rock was in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday....thus all the life....

This is a common misconception, as everybody is used to Fiji rock which has little life on it....my rocks are totally different as they are full of life.

As long as the ammonia is kept under 1ppm while cycling...all will be well..

Your cycle on your tank can be anywhere from 7-10 days and the furry stuff will break down in your tank. So just let it sit and enjoy because tons of stuff is going to be emerging from it. I kept my first part for almost a month before I got part two. So sitback and enjoy and watch .

I am posting the following message and pics at Richards request, RE: Furry Rocks

Subject: If I could make the smiley faces roll like you do....I would!!!!

Whadda great big WOW!! do you get! I can't tell you how hard it is to impress me (I'm not sure anyone else could tell you either! lol), but...! You actually surpassed my expectations!!! That's gotta be a first...or atleast darn near! (NW Airlink customer service was very nice...they couldn't help much, but they did do all that they could. All boxes arrived leaking, but not really that banged up, and the guy here was very upset! Thought you might like to know.)

I have 2 friends that are active scuba divers and they both said that they were very impressed! One of them has a 200 gal SW tank and he said he is now quite ashamed of his tank! Way to go, Richard!!

I'm still trying to figure out how to post pics on RC. Not to mention, just tryin' to figure out how to use this dagg-um camera...I think it could make french toast, if I could just find the right button! lol I'm gonna try to send you some pics at least - hope it works... (1st one is of left half, 2nd of center, and 3rd of right half.) Please tell me what you think...I would really, really like to have your opinion and/or suggestions!

BTW...plans for the 180 gal have already been forming in my head...or maybe a custom tank...what would you think about a free-standing, roundish horseshoe kinda thing?? (plumbing in the basement, of course!) hhhmmm?

I just can't say 'thank you' enough! What a wonderful thing you do...making our wildest dreams come true!

Nichele
