I have a HOB filter that was once used on a SW tank. The intake tube has coraline that doesn't want to come off. I want to use this filter on a FW tank. Will I need to get a new intake tube or will it be fine in the tank?
Should be fine. If the coraline has been dry for abit pretty much all thats left is calcium. Calcium shouldnt be a problem. Only time I would worry about it if i were keeping discus which need very clean soft water. Cichlids and the like no problem. If you are worried about it and the vinegar doesn't clean it up get some Muriatic Acid and it will take care of it.
no not if washed/rinsed well. Muriatic acid is recommended to be used to clean calcium deposits off aquarium equipment. My Deltec skimmer even came with a pack of it.
Muriatic acid is hydrocloric acid and water so just be careful with it. I have heard it works well but I usually just soak stuff in vinager overnight and that works most of the time.
Cool, thanks for the info. I'll run to the store this evening and get some vinager and try that. Now I have another question. I know you can use superglue in the reef, can you use it in FW tanks too?
