FW question

Ok, I'm setting up my nephew a little 10 gal. FW tank for his room. I have a penguin 125 filter for it. I was wondering though, I have had my 29 FW tank runnin' for almost 3 years now. Could I just float the bio wheel in the tank to seed it or would I have to actually run the filter on my tank? His tank is already runnin' with the filter, no fish yet, and I didnt put the bio wheel on. Or do I tie the bio wheel with fishin line and weigh it down so its fully under water? Thanks for any info on this.

anyone have any info? should I not worry about tryin' to seed the bio wheel and just put it on?

Thanks,
Steve

I also plan on gettin' a cup of my gravel to help seed the tank and maybe a couple gallons of water too. I had no problems setting up my 29 FW. Just wondering about this 10 gal.

Honestly I would not worry about seeding it. I would take it just like salt and go slow with fish additions. One plus with FW is the cycle is much slower. If you are really worried about it you could float the bio wheel in your tank for abit. Water changes with FW are so easy that filtration is nice to have just for the in between times of water changes.

Set the tank up and dump in some fish food. Let the flakes decay abit to start the cycle.

I also think adding some of your water will speed up the cycle. FW is so much easier than SW. I use to would compleatly drain and scrub everything in my FW and put the fish back in ( before I even heard of a cycle) with no trouble so they are much hardier than SW fish for sure. Also if you are interested in guppies I have tons of babies :) And they will give him plenty of guppie babies to look at and a opertunity for you to explain the "birds and the bees" to him

hes wanting zebra danios, so im figurin maybe doin 5 or 6 zebras and that will be it. maybe start out with 3 and add a few more later. Thanks for the info.

You should look into the glow fish. They are danios I think but crossed with coral DNA and they are pretty neat. We were going to go that rought but they fell in love with the fancy guppies at the store instead. Whenever the girls get there own room one day I will set up a small tank with them and run actinics on it to really make them pop.

yea, the glows are cool, but man they are expensive. As long as they are hardy like the normal zebras, that might be an option and get a flouresant actinic bulb. Still may get the tank started with 3 or 4 zebras then I could always move them to my 29 later. I already have 6 zebras in there. Thanks for the info.
