I think the deal is - spend over $50 (on livestock)and get an extra 20% off of the normal 20%... so $50 - 20% = $40 - 20% = $32

They have some drygoods deal too if you spend over $100, but I knew I wasn't going to do that, so I didn't pay attention to the details.

Pretty sure it runs all day Sunday too.

Picked up snails, cleaner shrimp and a wierd tang. :)

IMO almost never a good deal.

IMO almost never a good deal.

IMO, their sales are about as good as other stores every day prices. Sometimes other stores everyday prices are still better than their sales.
Their pricing is too confusing to be worth it in my opinion. Not to mention, the quality of their livestock is the poorest anywhere I've seen. Just my opinion.

Rob - It looks kind of like a lot kole but a little more grey.. Bristle mouth.. Kinda shy.

college - I don't know if you're even talking about the same place. When I go in there, they always have a lot of stock and it always looks healthy. Save for the occasional sick fish, which I see in EVERY LFS that carries more than 15-20 fish at a time.

Yes, you have to figure out the discounts sometimes at this place - and you pretty much have to be a WOM member to get fair pricing, but it's not like there are a TON of choices in Pinellas, I think a little math on my part is worth it.

Final note - didn't want to make this into a "this lfs sucks, no it rocks" thread - just wanted to let people know - so if they wanted to check it out, they could.

On Busch Blvd.

On Busch Blvd.

I am thinking of the one on Busch Blvd in Tampa. I understand the one in Pinellas is a little better.

Not every fish store. I no of at least one that I rarely see a sick fish.

Sweet! Is it the usual prebagged fish where they are laying on their sides? My favorite is the brown wild Acro's with the bonus aptasia.

I haven't been to the one on Busch in a long time, so I can't say.

Just because you rarely see a sick fish, do you really believe that they don't have any, or that they dont get some DOA, or that die later, develope ich...?

I seriously doubt that one store has some market source where the fish are a higher quality than all the rest. I don't hold a sick fish here or there against any store mainly because I know how many hands a fish goes through to get to its final destination.

I know for a fact that the best fish stores still recommend quarantine. Why? because they frequently don't have a fish in stock for more than a few days before it's sold. They know that there is no way to call a fish 100% healthy and pest free in that amount of time.

I'll give you this, if you already have an idea of what you are looking for, Pet Mart is pretty good. If you aren't sure, have some questions and want some hand-holding, I'm sure some specialty shops are going to be a better choice.

kab - pre-bagged? I don't even know what you are talking about.

Ok.

Ok.

I agree with what you are saying.
But some stores pay better attention to the quality of their own holding systems than others.

I agree.

Most stores also have a "sick tank" or something along those lines to hold the unsightly sick fish. The "perception" of a store also depends on the employees ability and willingness (not lazy) to pull sick fish from the main display.

Jeff

Also water quality.

Also water quality.

Also water quality. Many stores don't pay close attention to the water quality of their own systems. Some stores allow massive fluctuations in livestock levels without proper filtration. In many cases the staff, over or under feeds their livestock leading to deterioration of water quality in the over stocking or over feeding cases.

Some stores are meticulous about their water quality and filtration levels.

Some great sale, I stopped in today to buy dog food and they have a peppermint hog that they are calling a swiss guard basslet for $299.00.

THAT is insane pricey. Are those 2 different fish though? I've seen a lot of places call the swiss guard basslet a peppermint basslet/hog.

Rob - So, its a bristletooth tang :) Kinda dark grey with some purple around the edges. Pretty cool acting fish and happy chows algae.

Jeff

I always thought they were two different fish. The Swiss gaurd basslet I am thinking of is typically smaller with orange and purple stripes.

kab - pre-bagged? I don't even know what you are talking about.

Search back and you will find that this time last year they were 'pre-bagging' their fish for sale to make it 'easier' for their customers during busy times. No waiting! Just grab and go!

They'd have bags of mandarins, gobies, damsels, clowns, etc. just sitting out on tables waiting to be scopped up like they were on blue-light special. These bagged fish would be picked up, poked, and jostled for sometimes hours before they either died, were sold, or were put back in the tanks.

Sorry, but any person who calls themself a conscientious reefkeeper cannot condone what they've done and the way they continue to push crappy livestock with a used-car lot sales pitch. Plenty of ethical stores to support in this area.

This pretty much proves you know very little about the industry. Certain import countries are notorious for their lack of standards when it comes to catching fish and other marine specimens. I would recommend that you read more about the subject. There is a store in town that posts WHERE the fish and coral were collected at. This at least gives you an opportunity to make an educated decision about the item. This also lets you know that they are concerned with helping you keep the fish alive long term. The more you read and learn...the more you will realize this does make a drastic difference in the long term success of your livestock.

Yes, I know so very little. As soon as one of the fish I have bought there dies, I'll report in. (still have original fish from 6 years ago) - except for jumpers :(

No doubt, there are many places that collect by shady standards - I've watched enough video at the FWC to draw my own concllusions. It comes down to trust - you trust your LFS, they trust their Distribution chain, most of which they have never met. The entire situation really sucks.

Now pre-bagging fish, I have no defense for.

Regardless, this is not what this thread was intended for - I dont know why people cant just leave a thread about an LFS alone. There are pros and cons to every store, whether or not people admit it.

Wish I could just close this thread - next time I'll keep my mouth shut.

On this we can agree...at least when it comes to the history of this particular establishment. They have very checkered history in this town. Originally the knock was mainly they had poorly educated employees that made comission off of sales. This in itself led to many people being sold high priced coral and fish that were not suited to their particualar setup or experiance level. Again, the buyer is to blame, but to take advantage of people for strictly profit is a shabby way to do business.

Then the whole " pre-bag-em and buy em" incident took place. This was a confirmed sales practice at both Tampa and St Pete stores. This type of treatment of the livestock would never be practiced by any place that had any regard for the livestock at all.

Then came the wonderful threatening posts by "lawyers" associated with this particular establishment. This I found extremely hysterical, threatening to sue people for slander for posting messages regarding this pre-bagging practice. So, ya, it sounds like you may be out of the loop a bit.
