gaping question

I just picked up 2 3" maximas today, and one of them appears to maybe be gaping. I have a 30" tank with 400w 20k xm metal halides and the clams are on small rocks on the sandbed. I was told to start out with the clams on the sandbed and if they don't do well, to move them up. But if one of the clams is gaping, how long can I go with it like that before it becomes a serious health concern? I only have one other clam and it is a 6" squamosa which is healthy and super easy to take care of, so I don't really have any experience with gaping.

water params:

ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, po4 all zero
ph 8.3
alk 2.5meq/l
calcium 375ppm
temp: 79f

thanks
