How aggressive are these damsels? I want one for my 100 gallon fowlr. The most passive fish being butterflyfish, would they work?

Most Hypsypops rubicunda are suitable for coldwater or temperate marine setups.

These damsels caught my eye as well, but to maintain their coloration and health, you need to keep the water cooler than most commonly kept marine fish given their collected locales. They are very aggressive and butterfly fish would not be appropriate tankmates. They can grow up to and exceed one foot in length.

These guys live in my "backyard" which is a COLDWATER ocean, so unless you are keeping them in coldwater I would not recommend you owning own.
But say you do have a coldwater setup you would want a 150 gallon tank since they get 15 inches in length. Juvenile Garibaldi are not as bright in color, but have blue spots which they lose as they become adult. like all male damsel fish, the male Garibaldi will boldly attack much larger swimming creatures so you are probably safe since In a 150 gallon tank you won't have larger fish.
But I have heard of people having them in tropical setups ( not recommended )
p.s Butterfly's would not work unless you have a massive tank so the garibaldi's aggression will be "masked", and butterflys are not coldwater.

Hope this helped

Yep, I was interested in one, so did the research, need cool water (low 70's), and a largish tank ( would say 180+). And yes they can be quite aggressive.

I have one currently...he is a great fish...had about 1 year...got around 1.5 inches, now about 3.5...is not outwardly aggressive, but will def. hold his own if challenged...they do need a bigger tank and cooler water...imo, juvis are prettier with the blue markings...they do get big...
