Garf Grunge

Have not heard good reviews about the grunge. Not used it myself though. You may want to try IPSF if you need some live sand activators.

Garf Grunge Experience

Garf Grunge Experience

I ordered some Garf Grunge along with some cyano eating snails. I ordered like 60 snails and 20 of them were just empty shells. I wanted the grunge to introduce some new types of coralline algae and sand critters to my substrate. It was really grunge! it had a tremendous amount of silt and one handful in my tank made it extremely cloudy so before I added any more I needed to rinse the grunge several times in freshly made salt water. By that time all the beneficial sand stirrers were gone. No new coralline algae ever took hold either. All in all a disappointing experience.

MARSH (Marine and Reef Society of Houston) recently did a sizable group order of the stuff, and along with a horrendously long time to get the order accepted and delivered, I have not seen any postive comments for it.

I added 5lbs to my fuge and other than causing a silt cloud that lasted a day, I have not seen anything new and interesting running around in it over the last 2 weeks since we got it. It *may* have added a few more pods to my system, but nothing to write home about.

If there were any critters in it, then they are extremely tiny and will take a long time to grow enough to be visible, and effective.

Not a positive experience from my perspective. And from the Customer Service side, not an experience I care to repeat any time soon.

I have put Grunge in every tank I have set up. I personally like it. However, I think you would be just as well off geting a few cups or pounds from a local reef tank... Sand swaps are a great way to build up diversity.

Thanks,

Scott

You are absolutely right about the sand swaps.

On the other hand, your username points to the fact that you most likely get to make sure your grunge has life in it to the fullest. Not to mention that you can get it at anytime without having to place an order.

Have you ever had any experiences with what I am seeing in my tank after adding the grunge? Just go up to the MARSH link in the above post and look at the pics.

I place orders just like anyone else does. As far as I know when I order Grunge it comes from the same grunge system that anyone elses. I have also ordered the Grunge lite and had good luck with it.

I saw the the pics earlier. There are many things that can cause outbreaks like that. I have had similar outbreaks in my tank but I could never point to the Grunge and say it came from there.

Thanks,

Scott
