im looking at this stuff right now it seems like somthing i might need in my tank cuz i used mostly marco rocks and dont really have a good pod population....im looking at the graf grunge and a bag o pods anyone use this stuff before? if so is it worth it and what did you think

It's simply crushed live rock. They take a hammer to it. I wouldn't spend the money on it, but to each his own.

it definitely is filled with lots of good stuff, however, you could get some good stuff from any local reefer that has an established tank. It is also tough to keep the chunks from getting mixed up into your nice white sand.

well unfortunatly i dont have access to an established tank right now...so it does have alot of life in it? thats really what im looking for well that and some coroline to seed my tank

I just bought some of this stuff and am a bit remorseful now as this is exactly what I'm worried about. Any ideas on how to avoid this? I can just throw it in the fuge but then none of the life will really make it into the DT. I'm thinking I put it in a bucket that I set in the DT at an angle so stuff can climb out. Has anyone had issues with bad hitchhikers with this Garf Grunge stuff? I'm going to be ****ed if I get any nasties as this stuff was NOT cheap. God I wish I had done better research prior to purchasing! I should receive it in a day or so...my fingers are crossed over and over again.

If u put in in a refugium all the micro organisms should make it into DT just fine. Pods/ sm serpents can travel through pumps without injury.

On another thread a guy found a bangi carnal fry that made it though several pumps and made it to his mangrove tank, this is over 1300g system to.

Go to your LFS, ask for some crud at the bottom of the live rock tank. It is teaming with life. I did this on my very first tank and got a huge bio-diverse population, bristles, pods, small shrimp, etc. I dropped this in the sump and it worked perfectly. Garf Grunge is no different, though with as many years as they have been selling it, I am sure the diversity is not as great as you will find locally.

I bought the bag of pods and am fairly certain that the chaeto I got for free from a local reefer was what really got my pods started. Check out local reef clubs, people are always purining their chaeto back and that is where the pods hang out- usually free or a couple of bucks.

Its could also be a good way to add a pest to your system that you might not want. Not speaking for Garf only just the idea in general of dumping a bunch of something into your tank from another source.

Yeah this is my biggest concern. That and the fact that it may look like a pile a trash in my tank. It's probably going in the fuge. I'm a little frustrated. I got no tracking number. Emailed today for it and got no response. You would think hundreds spent on some live rock rubble and a CUC would get you a tracking number and/or/at least an email response. Should be here tomorrow I guess so I won't crap on it too much beforehand. Hopefully all is good. Just a strange way they run business!

There is always a risk of adding something unwanted in your tank. Live rock, frags, chaeto from a friend...all can add things to your tank. It is important to check what you add, and if you miss something, which you may very well, then deal with it. I have managed to keep Aiptasia out of my tank but Asterina's made it in on a frag, it only takes one.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, Garf is a decent organization, though at times they remind me more of a cult compound than a business. lol It will arrive and you will put it to good use, I would sump it though and sift through it first.

+1 I got my pods from cheato I bought at my LFS.

I put 15lbs of Garf Grunge in my tank along the back wall behind the rock, I love it. Since I added it to my tank i spend a lot of time look at my tank and watching with the lights out. I have some many different kinds of pods, little stars, its crazy! You will introduce all kinds of things to your tank and all kinds of coralines. Some people like it and some people don't.

What exactly does it look like? Sand? Gravel?

It looks like pink, purple, covered gravel I guess you could say, he also has a new garf grunge bright I think it is which is sand and not gravel I have not tried it nor seen it. If u play around on the website there are pics of the garf grunge and grunge plus.

Another thing you may want to try is maybe get some of the live sand from Tampa Bay Saltwater. I havent personally tried it but it seems like something that would accomplish the same thing you are looking to do. They say it has all kinds of pods, worms, mini brittles, snails, etc...Don't take my word for it though as like I said I've never tried it. Go check their website.

GARF grunge is simply the crap that is at the bottom of a vat of cured rock. It is what you want to get rid of when you cure live rock. You are better off just getting a few nice pieces of live rock.
