GARLIC? does it really do anything?

I don't think so. Assuming all perameters are correct, everything is hospitable, a varied diet should be all you need.

I know this is from the other thread.....It may do something....I really don't know. The problem is, we can in fact CURE the disease that garlic is supposed to help…

I really like the idea of bringing new fish in to a tank that is separate from your display tank. This tank should be fun for your new team member…a smaller version of the display tank….with cool places and somewhere to hide…to make his own…feed garlic, you know it tastes good….and other tasty treats…. Watch the team for several weeks….

If the team gets Ich or other disease…..Move them to the separated treatment tank….Treat them with the effective treatment (online)….then move them back to the observation tank with garlic…it is delicious, maybe some onion or thyme. Then to the display.

I have been told that most of the benefits from garlic goes away within hours of it being processed. Fresh garlic is best to rid pests etc, mince it and soak food then feed get you the best results

when you say VARIED diet what do u you mean? just like the pic? a couple different frozen and flake food and just mix them up from day to day

GArlic helps to boost the immunity of fish, it does nothing to actually cure Ich. To rid/cure the tank of ich, you need to use copper or hypo.It is helpful in getting some fish to eat. Overall, from everything I have read regarding the use of garlic, it has a minimal impact on the overall health of the fish.

I don't know of many people who see it as a panacea, more as a preventative measure. It's like vitamin water; some people drink it over pure water for the health benefits (vitamins, antioxidants, etc.), but they don't expect it to cure cancer.

I believe the main reason to use garlic is that it encourages stressed out fish to eat. In that way, yes it does prevent something--death. However, I don't believe that it effectivly prevents disease in healthy fish. In order to get that effect a varied diet is the only way to go (i.e. different flake, different frozen food, dried sea weed, etc, etc). I'm also a big believer in fatty acids, like Selcon. I think it does wonders for fish as well as invertabrates.

garlic does very little for disease. it does cure fresh water ick but there is no test or proof that cures salt water ick. it does help boost the immunity of the fish but doesnt do much overall. i still feed my fish pure garlic ones or twice a week . i figure anytthing that helps cant be bad. but dont expected to cure the ick. i get the best results of treating ick by giving them medicated food and feeding them more often for a period of time...spectrum..... and a water change weekly to counter attack the affects of overfeeding...good luck.....

i think m y main problem was only feeding frozen brine to my fish i think im going to go out and buy about 5 differnet frozen foods and five different flakes

this is what Lee Birch has to say about garlic over at reef frontiers:

Garlic. It does nothing to improve a marine fish's immune response or immunity. It was a rumor began by people who can't read the bad technical experiment conducted by Colorni et al. Please don't spread this rumor.

hmmm thats good to know but i wonder why so many people swear by it and why it is being made into food now o well i will not use this as a cure all thats for sure i will stick to the good old qt tank

I've been using garlic extreme with brine and mysis shrimp for my tank that has ich and noticed that the fish are very responsive with it and seem to look better and show less signs of ich when I feed them with the garlic vs without. It might be a coincidence but if it looks like it's working then I'm gonna keep using it.

If their is proof that garlic works for freshwater ich, then isn't their a good chance that it would work for saltwater?

just my 2 cents
