how do you get the gas out of your tank so your horses don't get this again?

Gas bubble disease does not necessarily come from the tank. Some ways to help make the tank environment less GBD friendly, though, include using a skimmer in the sump to aid in gas exchange and reducing dissolved organics, making sure there is enough surface agitation for gas exchange (so that pH is in the 8.2-8.4 range), directing flow so there aren't dead spots that would encourage ciliate growth, and keeping the water temperature below 74* to reduce the bacterial populations.
