Gas Prices

I am in Arkansas and rumor has it that some places have gone over 5.00 per gallon, however they just declared Arkansas a state of emergency which makes it illegal to raise the gas prices. They are encouraging people to take pictures of gas stations that are gouging and send it in so they can fine them or shut them down. Crazy stuff....

I think they should do that country wide.

I would go out and get gas, but I gotta wait for an hour to get past the line of traffic just for $10 worth.

Its ridiculous over a small hurricane...just another reason....i'll keep my comments to myself.

I heart that some of the gas stations in Christiansburg ran out of regular gas today. Luckily I got gas before prices jumped too much. Will see how it goes.

wow, i just read this thread about an hour ago........and i had been out of touch with what had been going on today about gas prices going up etc.

my car is about on empty, and i was just going to fill it up in the morning on my way to work. but saw this thread, and decided to go fill up now.

got to the gas station, only to be greeted by lines at the pump, while i'm waiting in line.......a guy comes out of the store......and changes the price on the sign outside from $3.50 to $3.99.....i was like.......***......

luckily when I got to the pump, they hadn't changed them over to $3.99 yet.

whew! i can't imagine what its going to be like tomorrow!

seems like at 9:30pm at night........prices are going up b/c gas stations want them to, in order to pocket extra profit in a time of demand. i just can't see corporate calling up gas stations late at night telling them to increase their prices......but who knows......

capitalism.. several stores around here sold out.

The local stores aren't the ones lining their pockets. What I don't understand is why we were paying 3.79/gal over the summer when oil prices were trading at 152/barrel, and we are paying 3.49/gal now when they are at 101/barrel... some are getting rich.

I actually saw a gas station on the way to work at $5/Gal and when I got closer to work, 3 had $3.69/Gal. Price gouging....we have regulations on alot of things in the US but this...

one person's price gouging is another person's example of capatilism at its finest...lol just give the ole supply and demand shpeal....

Fact is , Exxon Mobil and its subsidiaries turned a record profit for industry last quarter... When I say industry I don't mean the Gas/Oil industry I mean for any industry. Wild stuff...

Probably should understand a little more about hurricanes before making a statement about "a small hurricane". Having grown up in South Louisiana and having friends and family fighting this today. I wouldn't make that kind of generalized statement...

It may be a lower wind hurricane, but trust me, it isn't a small hurricane. Having a storm that is 600+ miles wide creates huge flooding and storm surge, and until you have lived through a storm surge like that, I would reserve comments. Not trying to call any one out, just hoping to educate a little bit. It's not fun or safe amd I'm a little edgy today until I get phone calls from friends and family.

And I raise my "invisible hand" in favor of a market economy. :) Retail price gouging doesn't favor that business if we have choice to purchase from another supplier, however, monopolistic oil companies undermine the market economy system. Oil companies need to watch themselves, else they could be nationalized.

I use to live in Florida right by the coast so I know the strength of hurricanes. Went through a few of them a few years back as a matter of fact and lived in a double wide trailer. So I do know a little something about it.

the "market economy" can be influenced/taken advantage of just as easily as any business that decides to price gouge.....I think we have already seen that in the case of traders buying up to 70% of the oil contracts in the futures market.

and all that money that the oil companies made in record profits, they just in turn put back into their investors.

you are right that *someone" out there is making all of the money, and its the oil traders on the futures stock market and the investors who have stock in the oil companies. there was something like ten thousand NEW millioniars in Exxons last quarter of profit, right after they put back the majority of their profit into their share holders.

we are doomed, america as a country. all the people driving v8 trucks and sport utilities just bcause they can, its stupid.
as a nation we are to dependent on foreign oil. Maybe when gas is 10.00 a gallon they will figure it out.

Someone needs to find out what profit margin the oil companies are making now. Profits are up but is the margin up?
