Gas Prices

Just think that you are not living in my home town were gas is around 10$ a gal. Also at the end of the day I will still buy it if it was 10$ a gal, not going to like it but I have drive to work and gas is the only way to get me there, glad that i still have my GEO that get 40+mpg and 235,000 on the clock.

Not to be devil's advocate but oil is right around $95 a barrel now. Gas is around $3.99 and over. It's not the oil companies that just raised our gas prices it's US!!!!! When there are lines down the street for gas you (not anyone personally) are increasing demand which actually does make prices go up. ANd just like ade said gas has been $10 per gal and then some for years in other countries. This country has lived on debit and credit for decades and you are seeing the colapse of that now. It's going to get alot worse before it gets any better. Anyone keeping track of their home values? Oh..and get ready for taxes....where do you think the $300 billion the gov't just promised fanny and freddie is going to come from???? Not them.. Sorry for the rant but I am in the middle of a poop storm right now because of all of this greed and reaction to stimuli......................

i agree with some of what you said but the reason gas is so high in europe is because of taxes on it. not because of supply and demand.

i did a quick google search and over 75% of the price of petrol in the UK is because of taxes. to me thats just insane.

That is true Mike, about 2/3 of it is tax. I say go to running a car on shine, doesn't cost that much to make and when you are not driving your drinking. All the troubles of the worls seem to disappear.

I wasn't talking about why Europe gas is more expensive. Just that it was in other countries and has been. We are dealing with an American problem. If we didn't consume as much as we do....not just in gasoline and diesle either... then we wouldn't be in this situation. If people living on $50K a year didn't spend like they were living on $100K a year they wouldn't be loosing their houses and so forth. It's the quick buck. The "American Dream". No one forced alot of these people to buy 3 or 4 houses to "flip" because of some TV show or crazy idea that property would perpetually go up. These banks(financial institutions) that then capitalized on this by passing it off to foreginers or other unsuspecting individuals...to make the quick buck. Then when the company colapses these CEOs get parting bonuses of millions of dollars. We as a country and society have done this to ourselves. Its called GREED. And unfortunately the little guys (me you not trying to leave anyone out) that just try to make ends meet and feed our children are left to pay for it with higher taxes and $4 gas. It's not all black and white and unfortunately those that actually have valid excuses of loosing their homes due to loss of employment or tragedy are left by the roadside to fend for themselves. Meanwhile Johny jacka$$ that leveraged 30 times his actual holdings gets bailed out by the government. Anyone on here ever had a company they worked for get ready to shut it's doors and then the government step in and say...no no no we aren't going to let you loose your job. Here is a few million or insert number here..... We'll take care of all of this. If you have....please speak up. I'd like to hear how that worked.

I agree with Ade.... I got a basement! Now all I need is my uncles old charger just like the Dukes and I'll run that **** for the club. With Roscoe P Coltrain right on my tail!

But in all seriousness, I am getting ready to convert my diesel to veggie oil. I've been doing a lot of research on it and at 201k my truck doesn't have much to lose.

did anyone else notice their fuel surcharges skyrocket on their most recent electric bill?

i dont know what power company you guys use in Roanoke, but when I was in bburg I think it was AEP. their power plants use coal to supply your energy........and the demand for domastic coal hasn't changed any........yet the cost is skyrocketing also.

i have virginia dominion power here in c-ville (combination of coal and nuclear a believe), and the state legislature just allowed them recently over the summer to be able to pass the cost of fuel on to its customers, and my electric bill went up by about 50% even though the actual usage went down by 25%....

.........absolute BS.........

My electric bill jumped considerably in the past two months despite consistent electrical usage.

have you checked to see what the difference is in your usage of kWh b/w your new place and your old place?

I call Roanoke Gas about thier increase during the summer and they are expecting a 50% increase in gas to heat your home for what they said was going to be a bad winter.

Yes I did and they're very similar (between previous months, and this time last year). Dominion increased their rates (18% IIRC), though my bill went up more than 18%. I think they increased the base price in addition to the usage rates.

Increasing costs are hitting me in my car, in my house, and in the grocery store. :( Hard times.

Companies has been doing this for years the oldest price gouge trick the oil companies used was that the use of #2 heating oil in the winter made the price of diesel increase. The two are separate refinement processes and do not directly affect each other, but joe consumer doesn't know that. So they would always jack diesel $.20 of so to offset this supposed demand. I am also looking at this and the point made way back that the oil companies are publicly owned and one of the few wealthy American companies really left that aren't packing up for greener pastures is true. Its a really good point to note the number of American jobs and investors that benefit from those companies. The primary factors in this that everything boils down two are tow things:
1) America is off balance in the job sector. We have too many white collar employees (managers) with not enough blue collar employees. Everyone is told now that your only decent life will be if you go to college and that is wrong. I am getting ready to graduate and will be making less then the majority of the skilled trades I manage for the first half of my career despite that my education debt is still being paid. I am also getting my electrician's license for this exact reason, I'll make more as an electrician than as a civil engineer. This is why America has outsources all the blue collar and manufacturing work, because Unions and employee "rights" are out of control in this country. I agree with taking care of the little man, but you can't blame the company for everything nor expect them to pay for everything.
2)Due to our open trade with China and other foreign entities we have allowed them open investment in our markets and their governments actually have created laws and regulations to encourage their investors to devalue our dollar. We are fighting an economic war with China. Sadly the only way I think we will recover is a full out "real" war against another country (vs. policing terrorism). Real wars bring money into our last true manufacturing industry, Defense! We need other countries to go to war against each other and we need to sell them lots of things that go boom! Either that or everyone needs to suck it up and we need to cut trade with China and other foreign entities and get used to a new lifestyle till we build things back up in this country. Oil is merely the scapegoat of a larger economic and global balance of power crisis!

Also another way to improve this situation is to invest in one of America's other biggest industries. AGRICULTURE! Get the government to stop paying farmers to not plant crops, so that commercial farms don't reap all the profits and so that the hippes get to cry over some grass getting tilled up and cows farting into the air. A cow fart is good for you, builds character and everyone loves a crying hippe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSEaHyzbqTA). INVEST IN SAUSAGE everyone loves sausage! Thank god for the American farmer!

tell me about it......these last 2 electric bills have me completely depressed as i didn't budget for this increase in costs at all. and of course, i have to take money out of my food/beer/hooker budget in order to pay for the extra electric.

i think my total bill went up by 26%......but i know for a fact the "electricity supply service - nonfuel" (i think that was it) increased by 100%...which is ridiculous IMO.

the state legislature is to blame for this, as they were asked to pass a bill over the summer making it possible for virginia power to do this (probably to fund their new nuclear power plant that is on the drawing board)

One of the main reasons I dropped the extra 250W MH and 2nd MJmod from my tank. Didn't need them, or their electric consumption. I also went from 12hr to 8hr of light.

All I need is a cabin, a powerwheels big enough to haul my *** around, and a solar generator for my tank and I'll be happy.

Seriously...I just made $1,400 for working 2 weeks and it went to rent, power company, gas company, and set aside $100 for gas for the next 2 weeks. I have downgraded to basic cable and the lowest speed on net. Also set aside some to pay people whom I owe and I am flat broke. Food? Ramen Noodles and Carl Buddig ham.

The nearest grocery store has remodeled and their prices reflect on supporting their super nice looking grocery store. I liked the old grocery store without all the bells and whistles! They still have the same lousy selection.
