well since I gave up the reef half a year ago (so sad still goodlord)... my starphire tank is just sitting in my room doing nothing. I was thinking of converting it to like a freshwater pond set up... anyone know of a good freshwater website? do they even have one? I m sure it's not even CLOSE to being as difficult or expensive as saltwater... but I'm sure there are still some technical issues I need to deal with. Any info would be great! Thanks guys! won't be back in this reefing thing until I get my own place and have a half million dollar BANK ROLL to support it (that wno't even be enough...). This is a sad sad hobby on the wallet hhehe =)

well for freshwater its nothing special same water just no salt and lights for corals and plantsare the same just plants like a 6500 spectrum or close to it,instead of sand you need soil and fertilizer, and if you really want your tank to do good get a co2 reactor, psidriven has a nice one for a great price pm him

thats pretty much it if you have any questions ill try to answer them, but that i know of no theres no reefcentral for freshwater

here is a pic of my 29 fw planted tank.

it is nowhere as complex and pennies to the dollar when compared to an equivalent reef set up.

i have my 29g tweaked to the max in bells and whistles and it is still well below the cost of what a reef set up would be.

co2 injection with a pH controller into a aquamedic co2 reactor, metal halide at 5700k, dedicated fw plant substrate and whatever else a fw planted tank needed.

i am very happy that i did a fw planted tank! it is a lot of fun and is somewhat of a digression from a reef! :)

william did i tell you that? the pirhannas are pretty simple to take care of. they dont ask for much...just some food everyday and something to give them some shade. they always make an awesome party conversation piece. If you are interested though...planted tanks and pihrannas dont realy go hand in hand. when theyre scared, they burrow and dig stuff up. also, they dont like bright lights too much.

Nah, I've been wanting to put some piranhas in a tank we've had in the house for awhile now. We have these cichlids that have been in that tank for about 6 yrs now. I swear we've only done one water change in about 4 yrs, ever since I left for college. My parents also have been using tap water, lol. They just don't want to get rid of those darn fish, argh.

hahaha wsun i know what you mean.. i have like 4 goldfish in my living room in a 40 gal tank with a built in filter, acrylic, and i wanted to convert that to saltwater.. but they just dont die! ive had the same fish for like 10 years now.. sigh.

ciclids are boring and over-produce (lots of young). Go with something cool like a red or golden arrowana hehehe

what happend to my thread =) went from freshwater pond to piranhas to ciclids to arrowanas...

hahaha

anyone know what kind of fish you CAN have with plants? I like that whole amazon look... a petstore close to my house has a setup like that... only think is my tank is like a 70G tall... so i don't know if I need to get huge lighting... wantedt os tay away from taht.

Neons are always cool -- small and flashy and plant safe. I like mollies, too, but they breed :D Most FW fish are plant safe.

Bergz! you prob dont' remember me but I went to your house to pick up chaeto before... and my tank has about 2ft of water left with salinity prob in the 5's (I haven't touched it for half a year after I emptied all life forms) and the chaeto you gave me is still green and alive! hahaha

Bergz how big how much od you think it would cost to set up something like what you have for a 70 g?
