GBTA

GBTA HOME!!!!!

i brought my gbta home yesterday, drip acclimated it for 2.5 hrs, and put it at the green circled spot. those things are light! had to turn all my power heads off so that it wouldnt keep flying up to the surface haha. it stayed in that spot for about 3 hours then it started to move. :( it was backing up, and it squeezed itself out from this small crack and out the other end. -_- when i woke up this morning it was stuck to a rock in the right corner. which i dont think the area gets much flow, so im not sure why it likes that area... sigh. hope it moves! cus you cant see it at all from the front.
and my clowns hasnt host it yet. they kept staring at it.....and swimming over it, but not touching it and would then swim away.
i tried taking pictures, but i only turned on the actinics so the light wouldnt shock it, and the pictures were too blue. i'll take more pics later on.

Be prepared for it to move some until it finds the right spot. If it attaches to a piece of liverock in a location where you can't see it, perhaps you can gently take that piece of liverock and move it somewhere more visible. As far as flow, I've had them settle and stay in spots with very little flow all the way up to fairly strong flow. I think having their foot attached to a place they like is more of a priority to BTAs than the rate of flow.

it has attached its foot to the rock, i'll see if it has moved again when i get home. if it is still attached to that rock, would it be a good idea to take that rock and move it to the place that i first put it in? or is that place already crossed out as its 'happy place'?
i'll put up pics once i get some nice ones hehe :D

It's okay to move the rock as long as you can keep the position the same. They don't like to be on top of a rock like an H. magnifica, they like to be on the side/slightly under and coming out of the rock, so to speak. Also, you don't want to move it if the foot is attached to two rocks, that could tear the basal tissue. If it doesn't like something, it will go wandering. I've had BTAs stay with "their" rock through several moves. If they really like the place their foot is attached, they will put up with all kinds of changes and remain stationary.

thanks garygb, i'll see if its still attached to the same rock. yes yes, it had its foot stuck on the 'side' of the rock, like it was hanging vertically. i'll make sure to keep it in the same position on the rock if i move it.

as promised....PICTURES!!!
not the best pictures tho, please forgive me, but it was hiding in the corner. these were taken from the side of the tank.

if its still on this rock tomorrow, then i'll try turning the rock around so at least its facing the front hehe.

Looks good, all your planning and he chose the that spot. I would think if you left it there it would eventaully move upwards twoards the light, it might prefer having it's foot on the backside of the rock . Just an opinion but your call, it's understandable that you want it where you can view it. Your clown seems to be checking it out, has there been contact yet? Looking good so far, keep us posted.

where it is right now, it does have its foot on the underside of the rock. i tried to move the smaller rock beside it, but its stuck. so i think it has its foot on two rocks.....i was thinking of just flipping it over to face the front hehe.
last nite the clowns were still not hosting it. the male was checking it out tho....would stare at it face down for about 3-5 seconds. then get really close to it. very very slight contact. very entertaining to watch, i sat in front of the tank about an hour haha. seems like he is still checking it out.
this morning tho! i went to look at it and the male was right beside it. looked kinda scary, cus the male was vertical, between the rock and the anemone, and it looked like he was stuck. but i think they were touching! the female wasnt touching the anemone tho, but was right beside the male. good news? oh and the anemone was HUGE...all tentacles fat and out. seems to be happy.
this might be a stupid question, but does anyone know if this anemone is female or male? or is there no way to tell?

Anemones are male/female, no easy way to tell though. It is still getting used to your tank, this is day 3 right? I feel hands off is best. Good call on leaving it, you don't want to damage it's foot. Looks like you just may have a hosting soon. Keep us posted.

i think they are HOSTING!!!
my sister is at home, but she doesnt know much about reefs, and she messaged me saying that the big one (female) keeps 'pushing itself in the anemone'. and she cant find the small one anywhere. and she said 'maybe the small one is stuck and the big one is trying to save it' oh gosh. i'm hoping that is good news, sounds like they are hosting!
but she said there doesnt seem to be much room where the anemone is right now and that i should move it....it is a pretty tight space in there.....what should i do??
yes today is day 3.
i just might have to go home at lunch to see! i can't wait till 5pm today!

Well, it sounds like they are well on their way to being hosted, if they aren't already. BTAs are either male or female, not hermaphoroditic. Generally, you can only distinguish whether the anemone is male or female when they spawn. For example, all of my RBTAs are male, as they are all clowns from the same original anemone. They spawn a few times a year. Usually several will spawn at the same time. When a male anemone spawns, a smokey looking substance is emitted from the mouth. When a female anemone spawns, a smokey substance with tiny eggs about the size of a period are also released. The entire aquarium becomes very cloudy. The protein skimmer becomes overactive. It's a bit of a mess. I usually run new activated carbon and stay on top of emptying the protein skimmer.

I didn't mean hermaphoroditic, I was not clear, I meant male or female, sorry to cause confusion. Congrats on the hosting!
