There are a few people who have done it...I think the results have been pretty mixed. Do a search for posts by "scubadude". He had a greenhouse setup that he cooled geothermally (doesn't have it anymore).
There has been a lot of discussion on RC about it in general. Do a search and you should find lots of info.
several people have done it from 55 gallon drums buried in the ground to running pvc loops throughout there yards. the ground temp only a couple feet down is almost perfect in this area somewhere near 77 degrees. as far as how many feet you need all depends on the material you build the loop out of or the drum. you can use plastic drums or regular pvc pipe or schedule 80 or whatever. the all transfer heat some material are just slower requiring more barells or more length of pipe under ground. depth doesn't really need to be that deep maybe 2-3 feet I am guessing. if you take a full shovel of sand from the grounds surface and put your hand in the hole you can feel a considerable difference.
if you put all that water underground you need to make sure you don't shut the pump off for very long because it will only take a few short hours to create and anaerobic condition and when you turn it back on you can poison your tank. maybe poison isn't the right word but it isn't a good idea. rotten eggs come to mind though.
I am not positive but I think matt / tangwang was thinking about this and I am not sure if he went through with it or not.
rockin reef has been using barells under ground for years.
john at ichthy has done some research on it also and may have some answers for you.
at work we use geothermal condensors but we have a million gallon tank we circulate the water in. million gallons isn't an exact number it may actually be bigger. it's a treatment plant so it's big.
