geting new 72 gallon saltwater tank need help

5 or 6 fish 2-3 inches would be fine, maybe 1 or 2 more if you have a 20g sump.

If you get larger fish you would need to keep less.

Possibilities:

Clown Fish
Blenny
Hawkfish (unless you have small shrimp)
Royal Gramma
Chromis
6 Line Wrasse

Maybe a yellow tang

Raynist has a great list of fish there to start out with. Are you new to the hobby? If so I'd not suggest Tangs. Just since they seem to be Ich magnets if you don't watch out.

The kinds and number of fish also rely on you wants and needs in the tank. Do you want something a lot more colorful or aggressive? Reef, FO or FOWLR?

I think the type of tank is very important. Chromis and the Wrasse would work well in any kind of tank. Clowns also seem to be a fan favorite and work in a lot of different kinds of tanks. Triggers can be awesome fish in a FOWLR setup, as can some of the larger wrasses like the lunar wrasse and porcupine puffers, but I wouldn't keep any of that in a reef. I agree with sirus about the ich...can be such a pain, and even QT your new animals doesn't seem to do the trick. I only have 6 fish, and about 200 gallons of water in my system, and would like to add 2 or 3 more, but I've found my reef does so much better with the low bioload, and emphasized my corals a lot more. I have a tomato clown, yellow chromis, sgt. major chromis, yellow watchman, 6 line wrasse, and a purple pseudo (frag tank for this guy) in my tank. It suits me well, and sometime I'd love to get a powder blue tang to be the main fish in the display.

In my 72 gallon reef, I have the following:

Clown
Skunk Clown
Six Line Wrasse
Lawnmower Blenny
Zebra Blenny
4 bluegreen Chromis
3 yellow tail, black fin chromis

this has worked well for me along with my inverts and coral but I would agree with Raynist you should start smaller - his list is good to consider

its goin to be a reef tank i have some coral from raynist that look awsome in my ten gallon so they will be transferd over to the big tank i will probly keep the 10 going as a frag tank and i will most lickly be makeing a sump for this tank i just need to understand them a lil more befor i do that the most i know about em in over flow in the underside of the tank into the sump sump fills passes thru the rock or what no the the return pump witch i got witch is 125 gph pumps it back into the tank is that about it or is there more to it
