Getting a Sun Coral to open...

Red Sea Purple Tang

Picked up a Sun Coral that wasn't being fed. I've been putting a 2L plastic bottle over the coral and mixing in some Cyclopeeze with the intent to get the coral to open and then give it some mysid/brine. However, the coral isn't getting the hint.

Any other suggestions?

Anthony,

When I had a sun coral, I pulled it out of the tank and put it in a dish with tank water, fed it cyclopeze or oyster eggs or shotank food (Matt makes it great stuff), left it in the dish. Pulled it when the main lights went out and the actinics were on. Good Luck high maintenance coral.

I had a sun coral that was half dead when I received it. Every other day I would place it in a cool whip container in the sump and stirred in a mixture of cyclop-eze and brine shrimp. Wait 15 min. Stir again. Repeat twice more.

It SLOWLY started to come back (over three months). Decided it was not worth taking time away from the family to continue doing that though. Alas, it is no longer...

I too have nursed suncorals back. I agree that if you take a mixture of the cyclop-eze and the mysis shrimp and mix them in a separate container. Put the coral in there and every once in a while stir things up. It may take a few days to a week or so before you're seeing any polyp extension but I promise as long as there's still flesh it will open for you.
