Getting glass cut locally...

Ive called like 10 places... some dont cut glass, some only speak spanish, some will charge me 1 sq foot for each 3.5" by 3.5" piece i need... leaving me with like $100 bill for my overflow and sump partitions...

im about to build my overflow and my baffles out of left over HDPE... In fact i think id rather build my baffles out of that because its free... Now i just need a few pieces of 1/4" glass for my new overflow box... and i need them by tomorrow so i can move the tank, etc...

anyone know some place i can get 1/4" plate glass cut? im even okay cutting it myself if i HAVE to.. the best ive found is Elite Glass Inc. over by my new apartment in kendall will give me 1 sq foot of grey glass for my overflow for $8, but then i have to cut the custom pieces myself because if i ask them to cut them is $8 a piece.. so $32 for my 8x3.5x3.5" overflow... That i then have to take home and silicone in place myself anyway...kinda dumb... and ill need to be there around 8am to meet up with "the boss" so he can cut it for me...

sorry.. the pieces i need are:

3.5x3.5" for the left side
3.5x3.5" for the right side
8x3.5" for the front
8x3.75 for the bottom

back will obviously be the back glass of the aquarium...

warning, HDPE wont stick or glue to anything. I tried it and it let go after a few days.

Glass cutting of regular glass is easy, just score and snap. Ive also used my metal cut-off saw with an abrasive disk on it to cut glass, no problem.

thats what i was thinking... and after i score and snap i could use a dremel with a diamond bit to make it so i cant cut myself on the edge? idk exactly how id do this... but possible with a minijet in a bucket of water pumping water over the edge of the glass?

any other ideas/tips? the move happens early tomorrow morning... im getting up at 6 to bucket my livestock and liverock... they will be in the rubbermaid tub for a day or so until the tank is done.. but if i am going to put in the overflow it needs 24 hours to cure, so the earlier on friday i can do it... the sooner i can get the tank back up and running on saturday...

just got another quote of $25 for just the overflow pieces...

i think ive come to terms with the fact that ill have no baffles in my sump, but i need this overflow box... like bad...

does ANYONE know how to clean up the edges after a score and snap with my dremel so i cant cut myself on them? i am willing to go get a diamond dremel bit in the morning if i have to.. i just need someone with some experience on this... PLEASE!!! im actually begging...

I've never done anything to smooth a glass edge after snapping it. I imagine shaping it with a diamond bit would chip a bit, not to mention being VERY time consuming. How often do you expect to be reaching into the overflow box anyhow?

It might be easier just to run a bead of silicone around the sharp edge to blunt it. Not the prettiest solution, but much faster.

the edge usually isn't too bad. You can run some fine-grit sand paper (recommend 3M 600 grit or better) on the edge to round it if needed.

Why not just snap the glass and put the edges u just cut on the bottom and leave the uncut finished edges on the top of the overflow?

u dont know if i can work that out logistically with 1 piece of glass... but i can try and draw it up this morning while im draining the tank...

I use

I just had an overflow built with smoked 3/16's with 4 pieces, 1 - 10x4.5, 1 - 10 x 3.5 and 2 - 4.5x3.5
This cost me $20

I also had them cut 3 large pieces of 1/4" for my sump, and notch a corner for an overflow. the pieces were like 18x18 each or so....
that cost me about $40....

Also, they sand the edges a tad so they are not sharp...

got a place off kendall and 127.. $20 which was the cheapest i could find anywhere... but i have to wait until tomorrow...

can you give some more details on this place ? i might be working on a new sump soon and the place you mentioned isnt far for me at all..thanks

You know the home depot in that plaza... its directly to your right when you are facing home depot.. first store on that strip... i have the name on my receipt when i find it..

and they cut it today... picket it up at 5:20 before they closed...

Now the big question is... do i wait and bring the pieces to someone who has experience.. or do i attempt to silicone it with my limited knowledge of proper silicone-ing methods... i suppose you cant go wront putting TOO much on and then shaving it off with a razor, right? and now how to keep them square... ugh...
