Getting out

It was fun, but the cost, (time & monetary), is not justifiable anymore. I am selling the center piece of my downstairs.

I've put $10,000 into this tank since I got it 10 months ago, (I've got the spreadsheet to prove it), and while I enjoyed it, when I look back I can see a lot of better uses for that money. My children deserve that money more than some fish. And the $10,000 does not include energy costs. In my opinion it is simply not acceptable to tell your child they can't sign up for activity X because we don't have the money, when I'm spending 10x that much keeping exotic fish alive and cool.

I am actually kind of excited to exit the hobby as it means I'll have a certain amount of extra money and time every month. Plus I'll be able to leave my house for more than one day.

Heck I could have paid for three nice dive vacations. For the money I could have visited my fish on the reef instead of paying all the money to have them brought to me :). I hope to find them good homes.

I know it's unlikely to find a single person to take the entire thing off my hands, but I do want to hold out as long as possible for that scenario. Parting out just takes a little longer and inevitably I would end up with left overs. I'd rather not split up my fish, they are in top health and are very happy together.

I WILL MISS THE HELL OUT OF THIS HOBBY AND MY PETS ;( Even my wife, my biggest critic, can't believe I want to get out now, "you love your reef tank" she says. If it were affordable I'd make it my life. I think I'll put some of the savings away for a nice dive vacation.

For sale one very happy, established reef tank

So, here's the rundown on the "Gundermatic-10000". http://fmellish.shackspace.com/aquarium
=====================================================
Complete used setup
- 120g acrylic reef ready 4-sided tank with center(island) overflow. 4' x 2' x 2.
- Internal acrylic surfaces have nice scratches near bottom. You can thank Mr. Tiny snail and Mrs. Mag Float. Yep I mag floated the entire thing one night and there was a baby snail in the mag float. I wanted to open my wrists up when I saw the damage. The good news is that the scratches are well defined and only around the bottom 6", I run a shallow bed, by all account, these may not be that visible if you didn a true DSB at 6". The scratches could be buffed out if it mattered. They do not detract from the tank IMO, and none of the casual viewers have ever noticed them. If I end up parting out, you could by the tank dry and then go to town polishing the inside. It has never been buffed before, and other than my usage the tank came to me in pristine condition.
- Tank comes free with coralline algae growing in corners where sides meet!
- Overflow box is 4-sided 6" perimeter for a total overflow surface area of 24".
- All plumbing and electrical implemented around 4-sided design, (nothing visible on any side)
- Custom built Stand and canopy, (I apologize in advance. I'm still learnnig how to use tools). Walnut stain.
- Stand includes, spacious front entrance with no center brace in the way, left wall with 4 gang plates of plugs, 2 gang plates the 7 day digital timers, all gang plates with switches.

- Tunze Single controller

http://fmellish.shackspace.com/aquarium (use the dropdown list at the top of each webpage to switch months).

I'm not looking to get all of my $10,000 back, even though I offer healthy specimens of established reef goodness coupled with top of the line equipment.

If anyone would want a pre-established reef tank I would let the whole thing, (everything in this post), go for $3,000.

At minimum you could break it down and sell the parts. The chiller was $835, and the Eheims were about $400 total, the Skimmer was close to $400 if I remember correctly, the Tunze with controller and magnets was close to $300 I think. The rock + sand was over $700 and the MH lighting was over $300. Not to mention the tons of money I've spent on fish and coral. And of course the tank cost me $900 to purchase initially.

I'm not entirely motivated since I love my tank. If I'm out of my mind asking for that much, then I guess i'm not ready to say goodbye to my baby yet.

:(

I'm interested in the initial response I get, positive or negative.

Cheers
Josh

Are you on crack again? jking man....

Man I wish you the best in finding a hell of an owner for that tank.

Ive been following you "Josh Diary" for as long as I can remember and you pretty much put ur heart in this set up.

GL

Sam

*gasp
its sad to see you go :(
i'm sorry i can't take much off your hands, but if you're parting out i would be interested in:
Cats Paw
Onyx Perc
and maybe your SPS corals and some LR.

please consider keeping a nano to keep your favorite specimens, less upkeep, less work, and CHEAPER :) you can't exit ENTIRELY!

good luck with everything else though!

Now that you have bought everything and have it all set up it seams silly to get out. You cost to maintain it should be minimal. and you are going to take a big hi on selling it. Now is the time to enjoy all your hard work. I know I have been enjoying me tank a lot, watching everything grow out. I even came back from RAP with more money in my pocket then I stated with since I didn't really need any corals. I only bought a few. Good luck what ever you do!

Sorry, Josh, I know how you feel. You may want to keep a small nano with your favorites -- it can be surprisingly satisfying. :)

There will always be another big tank down the road.

Laverda, I love my tank. I stare at it for hours at night and on the weekends. It is beautiful to me and I have raised every fish and coral from just a baby in the last year. It is very important to me.

For numerous reasons, some too personal to discuss here, my life is very complex now days. I am yearning to find ways to simplify. It's just too much work to maintain a thriving reef tank.

Cheers
Josh

Thanks Nicole.

I've still got the 90 gallon, however it sits empty with the words "Money Pit #2" writen all over it.

I may do a FOWLR in the 90 and try to get by with minimal light and no chiller.

Or I may just exit completely and unload the 90 also.

Thanks
Josh

lol how much for the salt creep lol....

sorry to see you go..

are you parting or is this a one shot deal?...

For now I'm going to hold out for the chance that someone shows up with a large truck and a forklift and makes the thing disappear.

Further down the road I may take a more realistic approach and part out.

:)

Josh

darn Josh, sorry to hear the news.

Have you consider keeping a lower maintenance setup in the 120? Since I started to downsize my 100g, I sold all SPS, and reduced the overall maintenance and the light cycle on the tank.
I have been spending a lot less time on maintenance (1 hour weekly to scrape the front panel), electrical bill for the entire house is now $90.

For those of you that have PMed me about parting out, I have not yet chosen the terms of my parting out.

I may choose to sell the clowns only if you take the anemone, or the sand only if you take the rock, or the skimmer only if you take the pump, etc, etc.

And I may reset the line. I have a line of people now waiting for certain items and that isn't fair to the rest of the public. So if/when I decide to part out I will announce it and then announce each bundle/item, and then at that time accept potential buyers either through a thread or PM.

Please don't PM me yet for individual parts. I can understand if you want to get your name in first, but the race hasn't started yet.

Thank you,

and strictlySPS, you're PM box is full :)

Josh

Sorry to hear that but you made a right choice. After all, it 's just a hobby and your family has to come first....

I understand, tanks can be stress on family....Especially on the costs to keep them...

The only expense that I put into my tank anymore is..
electric bill, and water, and fish food...

Everything else I buy in bulk, and the selling of frags kindof detracts the cost.. My goal is to make enough off of frags to just break even with the electric bill and everything else.

Every once in a while, I'll break down and buy something for myself, but not too often.

When I initially started my tank I was trying to be cost effective with everything, building equipment, buying used equipment, and I still think I spent about 6000...

But now it is just an electric bill and the wife commented on how pretty it is the other day...

It is good to be cheap in this hobby...

Good luck
F

WHAT???

Dump the SPS, Dump that Halides, get some T5. Sell the chiller and keep the bulk of the incvestment without the huge costs!

I'm just bored. The fish are pretty, but there excitement was in putting it all together.

It's incredibly fun to play LEGOs. But the fun is in the buillding. Now I find that I'm not having fun anymore, and it's boring, and I hate doing the maintenance. Plus the absence of all this headache also means more money in the family pocket every month.

Josh

If you want that excitement again, you should double up and upgrade to building a 240:lol: J/K.... Sorry to hear that your getting out. Looking at some of the pics, anyone can see you really enjoyed and put alot of energy into your tank... it's obvious you put alot of time and energy in to putting that system together - really nice. BTY, if you get bored with lego's after building something, try blowing them up..it's pretty fun too.
