Getting rid of button polyps

Hey guys I have a HUGE rock of button polyps and want to kill them off safely. I was wondering if it would work if I just either covered them with a cloth of some sort to irritate them till they die off or put the rock in a dark area of my sump so that they aren't getting any light to grow. Would these work without the polyps giving off toxins?

I wouldn't go the covering them up or letting them die route since it can cause a nutrient spike in your tank along with probably some toxins being released. If you can pull the rock out of the tank then you can scrape them off and then dunk the rock in freshwater for a day or two to really get them.

What should I scrape them off with? Here's a picture of the rock

I would take them to a local pet shop and trade them!
