Getting rid of Zoa's

Thisseemsfishy

Just another Reefer
How is the best way to get rid of them if they are attached to rock I cant take out? I have used AptasiaX with some success, but it seems they just keep growing. Any thoughts are welcomed!

Thanks

I have seen zoa eating nudis before, but they will indiscriminately eat all your zoas so unless you don't want any left it wouldn't be a good option.

Best way is to take the rock out and trade with someone for another rock.
Depending on the size of the colony, size of tank and type of zoanthids your system can have serious problems if you try to kill the zoas in the system.
Not worthy and not "human".
If the colony is small you can try to scrape it off the rock.
I wouldn't recommend the use of drugs or other chemicals to eliminate zoas nor Aiptasia from any system.

hot water right to the polyp and then patience. I had some zoas on a rock when I first set up the tank, they bleached themselves and 4 months later only the larger have gotten color back. I've cut down on the size of the colony greatly with this method

It is 100% impossible to remove some of these rocks they're attached to. If I use hot water, is there a chance they release toxins into the water?

I wouldn't use hot water on the zoas in the tank.

Can you try to scrape them off the rock?
Maybe if you post a picture here there wil be someone that will want the colony.
Try to scrape and glue to a plug.

I will post pics a little later. I can probably scrape most of them off, but I'm worried they will release their poison. Thoughts?

If you can, it's better than hot water, for sure.

Turn the pumps off, try to scrape them off the rocks and right after the scraping you can siphon close to the area were the colony was. Siphon all the leftovers and detritus. Take advantage to do a small water change.

You can frag the undamaged zoas, dip them, glue to plugs, and give them away, or even sell them.

You could also just smother the zoanthids with some epoxy. Eventually coralline algae will overgrow the epoxy and you would never know they were even there.

I've never had any problems with this. I guess they could have been rotting underneath, but when you do it right there pretty much sealed in. You don't even have to apply any pressure when laying it down, just create a blanket that will eventually harden up and block out the light. A dome so to say.
