Hey everyone. I am in trouble right now. My GF decided to get me a present and of course went for a condy anemone from petco :debi:. I dont know what to do. I currently have lps and a rbta. On top of that, it is almost fully bleached. She meant well but i dont know what to do with it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Can you return it? If so, make sure she knows you appreciate the gesture and maybe she will go shopping with you? To make it easier, explain that condys come from the Atlantic ocean and all the rest of your tank is Pacific...

ohhh that excuse is a good one. That was my plan; to explain to her it wouldnt be compatible but i appreciate it immensely. Its too late to return it today. Will it be fine overnight if i cage it in and return it later tomorrow?

edit: or is there some disease i should be worried about that could spread to me rbta? the local petco isnt the best quality..

I wouldn't worry about disease to much. What I would do is return it and tell her it died, unless she lives with you than that excuse may not work. In that case you could do as bonsai said. The only problem is honestly you will probably hurt her feelings by telling her its not compatible with your tank. My wife doesn't understand that certain things cant go in the tank either, I have had multiple people try to get me things from the ocean, not knowing cold water animals cant live in my reef tank. They always get upset when I explain it.

haha im all set. i explained it and she understood.( i hope :uhoh2:) i was planning on putting it in a cup in the tank where it could get light and stay warm but wouldnt infect my tank.( with my luck and their quality probably is ich water haha)

and id return it tomorrow she said shed give me the receipt

It won't infect your tank. There is nothing "wrong" with it - you could leave it in your tank indefinitely without issues. I was just giving you an easy explanation if you wanted to explain why you wanted to return it. Heck, an even easier explanation would be to tell her that you like clownfish and generally clownfish will only go into their natural hosts - certain species of Pacific anemones. Trust me - make her part of the process and bring her along to help pick your new critter. You want her to see that you really like when she buys you reef stuff because she is thinking about you :) Tell her how cool she is because most girls wouldn't care so much :)

LOL im in the same boat at the moment. me and gf's 1 year is tuesday, yesterday she told me shes buying me a suprise for my tank but wont tell me what it is...im dreading to find out what :headwally:

however...i do talk her ear off about this stuff most of time so maybe somewhere along the way she picked up on something i liked? idk ughh...

Best bet is if they wanna get you something for your tank, explain to them not just anything will go and that you would have to go with due to compatibility issues. I know girls like giving surprises but if you have to return it, it disappoints them. If you can convince them to go with you as opposed to a surprised, they should feel appreciated by your smile when you get something you really want. Its better than saying....uh that is not going in my tank lol

Coming from a female's perspective (although, one who loves reef tanks), take your lady to the fish shop with you, and make it a point to show her things you like. That way, she'll have actual ideas of things that will work in your tank, and then she can suprise you with an appropriate coral/fish/anemone for you tank. It'll be a suprise, because you won't know which of the items she picked out of the ones you showed her. And it'll be appropriate because you already had picked things that you like/will work in your tank. Win win all around.

Well just cause I show you I like it, doesnt mean I can have it lol. Like I have a 40 breeder.....but my eyes always see the sailfin tangs and I drool for about 10 minutes.

I would take her to a better LFS (not petco), and let her see the bad *** tanks they have set up. Maybe she will get on board more with what you are trying to do. Better yet, if she likes the reef tank thing she could do water changes for you! ;)

Haha thanks for all the replies guys. I explained it to her and she "said" :headwalls: she wasnt mad but i could tell she wasnt exactly happy. Right now im trying to convince her to go with me next weekend and buy something.

and you guys are right i am lucky enough to have a girl that cares enough to try and contribute to my passion i guess. she tried her best at least.

haha good luck! :hmm5: i talk to her all the time about this stuff too and look where that ended me up haha

You could have a little introduction party with her as you put the condy in your DT. Then with some fanfare, put it in "accidentally" near your overflow/power head intakes and watch her face. Then tell her this is what happens when she chooses something.

Of course I'm kidding (why nuke your own tank and kill a perfectly good condy). A lot of condys are naturally white, so it may not be bleached.

haha i think that would stop her. plus there would no longer be a thriving tank to put it in so id be all set

So i tried to take it back to petco today and they said they couldnt give me money back but they would take it and put it up for "adoption". But oh well i asked how much it cost and decided the price of the anemone is worth keeping her from being worked up haha
