GFO and Pinched Mantle

Tried posting this in the Clam forum, w/ not much response...maybe here?

Can you guys share your experiences with running GFO and its correlation with pinched mantle?

After reading several threads, and a reefkeeping article on GFO, I'm considering shutting down my Two Little Fishes Phosban reactor that has been running for only two days.

Is it a proven match? I'm thinking about running maybe 1/4 of recommended gram value of Phosban media, or maybe slowly introducing the GFO factor over a week or so; by shutting it off for 12 hours, then running it again for another 12 hours.

Any help would be apprecieated.

i personally dont know. i have clams, but dont have a phosban. i dont have any problems with phosphate, so no need for it. sorry i couldnt help more.

I never knew there was a corraliation b/w PM and GFO. FWIW, I've been running GFO pretty much since my system started a few years ago and I keep 3 clams.

Do you have links to those articles?? I'm kind of curious as to what they say. I have 2 clams and run GFO and they both clams are doing great.

It was my understanding that the problem with running GFO was only if your clam had pinched mantle. It does not cause the problem it just aggrevates it. So using GFO with healthy clams is not a problem.

I read this in the clam forum a couple of weeks ago. I was concerned at first also.
