gfo differences

I am currently fighting a GHA breakout. I have been doing water changes and also running GFO. I've been doing this about 2 months and have see reduction in the GHA but not elimination. Since I am new to running GFO and I am trying to get the best bang for my buck, can anyone tell me what if any difference exists between Phosban media, BRS high capacity media (about same price as Phosban) and the BRS standard capacity (half the Cost of the other two). Is one recommended over the others?

i would keep doing what your doing if you see a reduction

What level are po4 and nitrates?

In addition to what your doing, you could:

1. Add a fish that eats it- Kole tangs clean all day
2. Add more snails
3. Feed less frozen food, instead feed pellets and flakes.
4. Feed less in general
5. If not Led, maybe you bulbs need replacing
6. Add more GFO in the reactor and change it more if exhausted(need to know po4 for this)
7. Add Cheato in your sump
8. Try Biopellets
9. Dose Vinegar or Vodka. Or a combination
10. More water changes or bigger ones

Need to more about your system to help, but these are a good start

Good question, I would like to know as well. Although mile gave good advice, the question wasn't answered, lol. Bump:)

FWIW, I use high capacity, it works really well.

Po4 - 0.08 Red Sea kit
Nitrate showing 0 by API KIT

System is a 120 DT WITH A 40 gal sump. 95 total water volume. NWB 150 for a skimmer. Started skimming lighter to increase quantity. Have changed all filters on ro. Changed bulbs in February so they are due again. Ro tads is 0.

I have (2) pistol shrimp, (1) skunk shrimp, a tuxedo urchin, 1 ywg, 1kole tang, 1 banghii cardinal, (2) black yellow tail chromosome,(2) perc clowns and a Midas blenny.

I have been blowing off rock and changing 20 gal of water per week.

1. I have a Kole tang, he prefers the lighter algae on the glass
2. Added the 120 gal package from reef cleaners about 2 months ago.
3. Feed 1 cube of frozen once a day add a 4"x2" piece of nori every other day.
4. I could feed every other day....yesterday I bought a different brand of food. I don't rinse the food but I thaw it in a cup and drain the water before I feed.
5. New bulbs are on the way.
6. I an running 2" in my tlf reactor
7. Had cheats in my sump but that is where the reactor is and it almost all died.
8. Are bio pellets better than the GFO?
9. I was going to start dosing but I heard some people get algae when they start and I didn't want to add to the problem. So you would dose even with the bio pellets?
10. This is one I haven't tried yet.

Thanks for your help and suggestions

hmm. bulbs are only 5 months. Should be ok.

I use red sea po4 too. Works well. I recently switched to hanna ultra low po4 reader and its been good. The regular hanna kept giving me a reading of 0.
U can test your po4 with another kit to see if yours is accurate.

i use 2 gfo reactors now. two 550 tlfs (3-4 cups brs regular in each). along with biopellets, dosing 60mls vinegar daily, cheato in refugium, and also kalk in ato for po4 reduction.

no playing around! lol

Sounds like a plan. I ordered the bio pellets and the screens for my tlf reactor. Maybe This will catch the nitrates before it turns to po4. will begin dosing vinegar tomorrow. I will be adding new cheato if what I have doesn't come back. I was thinking of getting a phosphorus checker from Hanna to see if maybe my kit is bad

Yeah Rovster I was hoping some one here would know. Like everything in this hobby you usually get what you pay for..

Biggar, kalk in ato for phosphate reduction? Can you please elaborate on this, never heard of it and it sounds very interesting. Thanks!

Dr. T , thanks for the link. From what I get is that the high capacity seems to remove the same but just lasts longer
