GFO (think PhosBan) Bulk Order!!!

Oh I have lots 'o rust... Just let me know how much you want and I will bring some to the meeting at the latest.

Aaron,

I like that article. Awhile back there was a debate on wet (Rowa) vs. dry (GFO) because a claim was made that 'wet' phosphate removal was 30% more effective at removing phosphate than the dry version. There was a report provided as proof (sponsored by the folks that make the wet product) that seemed to back the claim. What should be noted is that in that report at the range we find phosphates in our system - BOTH dry and wet performed similiarly. At high concentrations, the wet version seemed to pull more per volume, and this article seems to back up this train of logic:

"Some published experiments do purport to examine the relative effectiveness of different brands. In one such study [the link to that report was here], the phosphate binding data were largely generated at phosphate levels above the range likely to be encountered by most reef aquarists (0.5 - 3.5 ppm), while at normal aquarium phosphate concentrations (up to about 0.2 ppm), the two products appeared equivalent. In a second study, two products being compared were dosed at such high levels that both products bound nearly all of the available phosphate (down to 0.01 ppm). Such a test is akin to comparing the pain reducing efficacy of morphine and aspirin by showing that both relieved a headache. "

So the lesson to be learned is be careful on what you gleam from scientific data. Truth and facts are often obscured by the details. ;)

Whatever route you go, be careful with your phosphate removers.

Especially the aluminum based media. (The white stuff). I had been using it for months with no negative results and then about a month before we got the GFO, I accidentally dropped a rock onto a filterbag full of a bunch of it in my 120 gal tank refugium. A thick cloud of white particles was released and ended up in my display. Within a day, all my mushrooms and anemonies were freaking out. I have done about 100 gallons of water change and am about ready to remove my entire sandbed. Seems the white particles are mixed into my deep sandbed and now whenever it gets disturbed, I have pieces of the white dust land on my corals and it hurts them. I had to move most of my stuff into the other tanks I have. I might have my first FOWLR tank if I cant get this stuff cleared up.

GFO is reported to have the ability to do the same thing if it is disturbed and settles on the flesh of clams. (Causes Pinched Mantle)

Be careful with any of this stuff. Nothing has died, but, it sure looked sick unitl I moved everything.

And my fish are all fine.
