Giant, and I mean giant, clam

Just bought the new Marine Fish and Reef 2004 Annual edition and saw this pic: it's a T. gigas taken in the Solomon Islands.

I believe Gigas grow to be the largest of all tridacnas. Years ago, before color T.V. I always watched reruns of a movie where the native boy diving for black pearls always got his foot stuck in a giant clam. I think of that picture every time I hear the expression "Giant Clam" instead of "Tridacna".

the waikiki aquarium has two of them in their reef tank that are well over 3 feet across.

I went snorkling in Aus. on the Great Barrier Reef last summer and there were clams (not sure if they were gigas) but they were about the size of VW Beetles!
