Giant Clams

Well it's not technically a fish but, I always wanted one of these. My 135gl tank just got in the lfs but I was wondering how to keep them. I know u need that special light and all but my question is how do you feed them? It says marine snow is good but how do you use that? This is the one I'm looking at. Is this one difficult?? :hmm2: Thanx!

There is a tridacnid forum under special interests. Marine snow is watered down phytoplankton. You need Power compact/vho/metal halide to keep any giant clams. There should be a FAQ there.

With a 135 gallon tank you will need metal halide lighting to keep maxima and crocea clams, and it would still be preferable for a squamosa clam. If you have LOTS of PC or VHO lights you might be able to keep one. What kind of lights will you have on the tank? (The tank also needs to be mature....at least 6-12 months)

I have been able to keep a maxima under a Coralife fixture w/ 4 65watt bulbs(2 actinics and 2 10,000k) for the last 4 months. He sits at the top of the tank about 10" from surface. I dont directly feed him but he seems quite happy with phytoplankton and calcium(mostly for my corrals).

Be careful....many maximas won't last much past 6 months in those lights. I've seen it in others tanks. My LFS has a 55gallon show tank with 4x65, that has thriving lower light clams and various corals. Every time they've put in a maxima it didn't last much past 6 months. They look fine and then, bam they're gone.
