Giesemann 24" Spectra vs Hamilton Cebu Sun

Hello,

I am not completely satisfied with my Reefbrite Halide Hybrid. I like the 250w Radium with (2) led xho reefbrites because it is a semi-small fixture over my tank. I have a RedSea Reefer 170 and my dimensions are 24x19.5x20. I used to have an ATI non-dimmable Sunpower with (1) 24" xho all blue reefbrite added on. I was totally happy with the color it gave me however my wife didn't like how the Sunpower blinded her. I found a great deal on this Reefbrite Halide Hybrid and jumped at it. I don't regret my decision at all but I do wish I had more color options.

My Pros are:
1. I don't need to change out t5 bulbs at present, only a single Radium once every 6-9 months.
2. The reefbrite hybrid looks good over my tank, its hanging from the ceiling.
3. Other than the 250w Radium the LEDs only consume 40-50w. If I remember correctly at peak power consumption I am floating around 3.6 amps for my whole setup.
4. I have a dimmer for my reefbrites so I can dim them using the apex from 1-100%.

My Cons are:

1. I do not like the color from only the reefbrite strips by themselves. I would like more options when the Radium is off.
2. Because I don't like the colors from the reefbrites I am using an 8 hour photoperiod on the Radium, something I wish I could reduced if I wanted or have t5s on and a 4-6 hour radium photoperiod.

The way I look at the two options posted in the title are:

The Giesemann is best looking pendant over my tank especially since I do not have a hood. But it also would fit snug over my tank basically taking up most of its footprint. It is also more than double the price of the Hamilton. It only has 2 power cords coming out of it, one for the t5s and one for the MH. This can be viewed as a pro or con depending on your viewpoint since all 4 T5s must come on at one time.

The Hamilton is much cheaper, I was quoted a price of around 370 bucks for just the fixture. The Hamilton doesn't look as good over the tank but has active cooling. But because of these fans it could produce noise and my tank is ultra quiet and I would like to keep it that way. It also has more cords, I think the guy from Hamilton told me 4 cords for everything including the fans.

Sooooo... as you can tell I am at a crossroads. Do you all have any opinions?

Thanks a bunch,

Jared

I have the 48 inch spectra with radiums and love it. Nice clean and quiet fixture. But the price of the Hamilton would be hard to pass up. Either one you pick I think you will be happy with. It's nice having t5 in the mix. I only run the halide for 5 hours and t5 for 10 everything looking good. Do you run the Hamilton M80 ballast with your Radium?

Yes I do. My issue isn't the radium. I love the Radium. My problem is the lack of transition from LED-MH. If the MH aren't on everything is soooo blue I almost don't like looking at the tank.

I own 2 of the Hamilton dual 400W Cebu Sun fixtures with T5 and love them. No, they don't look as nice as the Giesemann, but they grow coral! We installed them at the beginning of December '15 and have seen more and faster growth than the entire year on only LED. They do get hot and suck allot of juice though, so I'm working on a LED/T5 hybrid solution for the summer months here in AZ.

What bulbs do you run with the radiums? When I ran t5s I used to run 4 blue+, 1 purple+ and 1 coral+. What 4 bulbs would I run to complement a 250w radium driven with a m80 ballast?

I'm actually running the stock setup, 14K Hamilton MH and their Real Actinic Blue 460nm T5. I have 4 new 400W Radium sitting in the wings ready to go, but thought I would try their 14K. I actually really like them, and so do my corals! For the ballasts I'm using the LuXcore 400W adjustable ballasts from CoralVue. Hamilton was out when I placed my order.
