Giving Back

All,

I just met with some folks at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital and wanted to get this idea out there for comment. I met with several folks today and had input from Infectious Control, Plant Operations, Hospital Administration, and others on the possibility of our club doing a reef tank somewhere at the hospital. At this point they are going to scope out possible locations and we'll go from there. Even if it can work from their standpoint, it will only work for the club if we get good member participation in terms of maintaining the tank once it is put into place. I think the club is at the point where we can definitely do this if there is the will from the membership. Here is what I would like to propose:

1) We have about $1500 from the Frag Swap that we could put toward doing a tank, if the membership is okay with donating that money towards this project.
2) We would probably work out a bi-weekly tank maintenance schedule with a primary club member responsible for that week, and a backup.
3) If we decide to do this, I will pursue getting donations from vendors and support from the LFSs and the Aquarium Restaurant. I have already spoken with the main marine biologist at the Aquarium Restaurant and we may be able to get fish from them or at least have them quarantine fish to make sure they are all nice an healthy before adding to the display.
4) Donations to this effort if made directly to Vanderbilt would be tax deductible (I'm confirming this).
5) They are very open to us having an educational display to go along with the tank to let parents and kids know how to take care of fish at home so they don't try their own tank and have it fail.
6) They are investigating what kind of display we can have of vendors supporting this effort.

There are a bunch of things that need to be worked out, but it seems like it can be very doable. Please respond back to this thread with your thoughts on this and whether or not you would be personally interested in helping out in one way or another.

I think it is a great idea and I'd love to help as I can (I work at VU, so it is close on work days).

Assuming we can get sponsors to pitch in and help with some of the major costs (especially regular maintenance costs... salt, light bulbs, etc.), I don't see any reason we would need to eat into the club funds...

I would personally like to avoid using club funds from the standpoint that the money that we "raised" from the swap should be there to be invested back into the swap so we can cover our costs up front and grow the thing from year to year. I would think we could get by on club member donations if enough people are behind it...

One other thought... I think it would be really awesome if we were able to stock the entire thing using donated frags/mini-colonies cultured by club members. Not only would it help keep costs down, but it would REALLY show off a lot of environmental consciousness... and saving wild reefs is certainly one of the main reasons reef clubs exist (or at least it should be).

Needless to say, I'm on board. :)

If I remember correctly from our last meeting, Brian, those funds are extras in addition to funds that are ready to go back into the swap... but I definitely hear ya...

And great idea on stocking it!

My son wouldn't be here if it weren't for the fine doctors and nurses at the VCH. I think it is a great idea and would be great for the families who make the hospital their home away from home when they have children there.

I'm totally for this. Frankly, kids LOVE fishtanks. And if we can put a smile on those kids' faces that are stuck in the hospital for any reason, I think we should do it. We clearly have first hand ties with the VCH with club members and I think it would be an awesome use of our club know how and time.

I also think this is a very worth while effort on the clubs part, I will do what I can to help support this project.

Awesome interest!

Good points, Brian -- on the club funds, we are holding back funds for the swap. This is in addition and I thought we could use it for things that we can't get donations to cover. For example, we may end up having to purchase a particular piece of equipment, or salt mix, or food. The plan is to get as much as possible donated and then if the club is up for it, using some of the $ from the swap to cover other expenses.

I like the idea of stocking it from club member's stuff. To make it easier to maintain, my guess is it would be best to have it have some of the more hardy types of animals.

you can count me on for some setup help and input, and of course coral donations if we go full blown reef. I can help occasionaly on maint, but with my work schedule, it may be tough here and there. The biggest thing I can offer is the fact that this tank needs to be as aotomated as possible as we will not be there every night like our home tanks, but not too complicated those of us dummies (self included) cant figure it out.

Great idea guys:thumbsup:
I have admired the work done on the St Jude tank since it's inception. LMK when you guys get to the point of QTing corals. I would love to donate a few frags:)

Well, if we have the "extra" money then I'm not against using club funds either... I just didn't want us to be in a pinch when it came to our biggest club event... especially because I think it would be easy to raise money to get whatever we need for a VCH tank.

Lots of interest... let's get it done!

This is a great Idea. I am in for any help I can give and anything from my tank. I have seen tanks in children's hospitals before and they are greatly appreciated. It brings many happy hours to the children and parents while they are there. The idea of showing them how to create and maintain a tank at there home is even better. Just let me know what I can do.

I agree with Brian I think we can raise some money for the tank at Vandy and we need to look into setting up a separate account to run that through I can help look into that when I get home.

I am thinking that I can push this at work and see if they might want to sponsor something like this. They are needing to get their name out in the community. I will ask and see what they think......

This is a wonderful project for the club and getting the knowledge out there about the failing reefs of the world. Not to mention it will benefit those in the hospital. I am wondering how large of a system are we talking about 200, 500, 1000 gal?

I support this project also. Its been quite a few years ago my son need there help! The doctors and nurses there saved him. I agree with Wayne and Brian that we could raise money. With sponsors the tank would be nice. We could use the club surplus when thing fall short. Then we could do more fund raising as needed.
