glass cages sumps

hey gang,

well, I have a bit of a budget for my move. wife wants a new stand and looks like I will be getting a new sump as well to give myself a larger margin of error than I have with my current 7 gallon sump. I am looking at a 20 gallon sump from Glass cages. from what I was told when I spoke with them today is that most folks just take the supply from the overflow and place it into the tank. I currently have a flexible tube that I planned on using. if I do this, how do I utilize the bioballs and filter pad? does anyone have one of these in use and can shoot me a pic of it? looks like a very cost effective way of getting a sump. OR, does anyone have a sump of about the above mentioned size? I have found my stand at it is 30" tall.

for my sump i used a 20 gallon long tank from petsmart for $25

Then I bought the glass dividers at home depot they are abit thin but are doing fine for my size an application. I believe they are meant for picture frame replacement glass. They were $3 a piece. I bought 3.

Also at home depot i got their simple glass cutting kit for $6.

Then I used some silicone from home depot meant for doors and windows. If you need the name of it I can find the tube in my garage somewhere... I think.. It was $6 I believe.

I tried acryllic baffles first but they are horrid when trying to get attached to glass. I now have a sheet of 1/4 inch acryllic somewhere in the garage.

Thats all I used for my sump. I thought it was purty cheap and does the job. One big honkin skimmer, liverock, and flow in the tank should take care of the rest.

yea, I have thought about building one, but for me, time to do it is an issue. I have to have it when I move to be able to get it into the stand. I doubt we will be getting a new stand, so I am looking at a 15gallon long and doing a custom design. the problem with DIY (I love it), is that the free time I have to build it will be spent packing. I have aobut $150 to work with.

well, I went out to GC yesterday and saw the operation. Tom is very outspoken and does not hesitate to speak his thoughts. I was looking at a 15 long sump and had my own design incorporating a media tray for placing purigen, chemipure and other bagged additives. he told me i would not have enough room and took out some extra baffles I had drawn in there. he told me that I needed to go to a 20 long to get the room I need. so, I am getting a 20 long custom designed sump for $125. Piece of Cake! takes 1 week. so next wednesday or so I will get to pick it up. Sump will incopporate a bioball area, media bag area, skimmer compartment and then a large return area for water level fluctuation. the skimmer area can also be converted to a fuge area if desired, but it will have full flow of water thru sump.

I also found out that he is the largest supplier of acrylic custom tanks in teh NATION! WOW. he has a huge new addition which looks to me like it will be a shipping receiving area, but since the docks are not finished, it is a tank prep area.

Angela,

thanks, but I plan on using the ones out of the old sump. all I need is another good pump for my tank and thinkgs will be going great

I've still got a Sedra 9000 that pumps 900 gph, if you're interested. $90 (I ordered the wrong ones-NIB).

Gary, I was hoping for something considerable stonger. like the 1500gph range. for a loop system. However, I might consider it if I find an issue with my sump return pump. I am so excited about my new sump it isnt funny! I do have to install a bulkhead. where can I find them other than the critter?

Yea. they could have drilled it,b ut I didnt know the exact size, so I decided to drill it myself if I can. otherwise my supply to the sump will just be tossed in there.

gary, I think I may have one so long as no one outbidds me on ebay. I have been trying to score a free one form Pentair, but I my guy there is running into dead ends. looking at one about 1500 gph.

Got it!!!!!

Got it!!!!!

well, I picked up my custom sump today. looked almost perfect. it was built almost to my design with 1 issue. the skimmer area was supposed to be 9" and it ended up at 13". major issue because it caused my return area to be too small for what I need for hte pump, heater and margin of error for top off. they cut me a new piece of acrylic to exact size and were going to glue it in, but I chose not to so that I could render the old baffle useless. this will now give me an area for my heater to fit in the return area. I basically cut 2 2"holes in the baffle right at the bottom and my heater will slide inside one of these. I also drilled my bulkhead hole and installed it. tank was leak tested without the new baffle and had no leaks. I will install the new baffle tomorrow and silicone it in, and then hopefully provide yall some pics of it.

BTW, the glue work and overall finish on the tank was PERFECT. very very nice.
