I was not planning on trying to raise baby cardinals, or breed these guys. I have what I now know is a male/female pair of Glass Cardinals. I noticed yesterday that the male was carrying eggs. I have a 135 gal tank with a handfull of wrasse/hogfish. I knew the babies would be gone in that tank.
I spent all day today trying to catch the male to move him to one of those little holding containers that hang on the tank. It was rough with a reef tank. I finally got him about an hour ago and he spit the eggs out into the net, which I didn't notice at first. I saw that he didn't like the little container and moved it to my fuge. Thats when I noticed he didn't have the eggs anymore. I looked in the nex and two little clumps of eggs were in it. I took the net and dipped it in the fuge and the eggs sank into the cheto. As soon as they settled in they all started to hatch. I decided to scoop the male back out and put it into the main tank.
So now i have this fuge, overgrown in cheto and other nasty algea, that has extremely slow flow and lots of life. I'm not going to go out of my way, anymore (catching that guy was work), to try to raise these fish. I really don't expect many (1-2) if any to make it in the fuge, but i figure it gives them their best chance. One of the lfs had a cardinal come in with babies and he put them in a fuge and had 4 survive.
Just thought I would share it all with you. Its one of those fun things when your tank has been looking like poo and corals are dieing back, to see your fish breeding. I'll post back should any of them survive. I won't be able to see any of them in that tank though should only a few make it past a few days. The macro algae is so thick.
