I use (and always have) Windex carefully sprayed directly on the glass. Most of the worry is that ammonia released into the air may be sucked up by the exposed H2O. I've personally never had a problem, and I intend to continue the way I do it. I'm not saying its a bad idea to spray the cloth away from the tank, or that vinegar isn't effective (except it may lower your pH...), just what I've done for the past 24 years or so...

+1 have never had a problem either, I think this whole thinking goes back to the old aerosol days, when gosh only knows what was coming out of the can or where it was going
