Glass edges

I finally found a glass company that will cut glass for me but they just sand the edges is this ok to use as a external overflow? the overflow is only 7"x4"x7"

i'm not totally sure if i understand the question, i can't see why it wouldn't be ok. they sand the edges so they're not razor sharp, if they rounded the edges it might not work for a tank, but sanding is pretty standard. just tell them it's for an aquarium and you don't want too much taken off the edges and it should be ok.

What he means is tell them not to bevel the edges, and stick to the tolerances you give them as closely as possible, and tell them you want smooth FLAT surfaces :)
Other wise you will get beveled edges every time that you CAN NOT silicone together.

if your going to drill the tank by a internal box from ebay for a good price i did and it was large enough for bulkheads. ps make overflow holes as large as you can it will aid in less noise and you will be able to increase flow rate from sump.

O man! Thanks you! I had put it together and siliconed to my tank. I thought I was going to have to take apart my overflow to polish the edge or buy new glass. Whew! :D

Why on earth cant you silicone beveled edges....every single tank that Aquariums obsessed sells has polished beveled edges..

silicone is designed to bond to glass and other silicate based products

ground, sanded, polished, beveled, raw should make no difference...

beveled i would think would be preferred as there is no "hard edge" to be damaged if banged...

Nope, was gonna use it when I first started this hobby, but good thing I came on here first to check when I saw mold and mildew resistance on the bottle. So much cheaper then those "aquarium silicone" from wally world. :)

Around here when the glass shop cuts and finishes the edges they sand it and bevel the edges to where its basically round with less then a frigg'n 1/32nd flat surface depending on the thickness of thew glass. I would never use beveled edges. it would act like a door hinge.

I DID NOT SAY you couldn't use a panel cut with a diamond blade.

The reason for stating "sand the edges" to begin with was because most places score and snap for leaving an uneven surface you don't want to use. There is a distinct difference in knocked down edges and a bevel. Very distinct. I would also hate to see a tank built with rough uneven edges like your saying would make no difference.
I would be an accident waiting to happen if you ask me.
