glass-holes kit installation

can somebody tell me how far down from the top of the tank the overflow box shouuld be from glass holes? its the 1500 kit that I bought. Not sure of the height it should be at and dont want to drill in the wrong spot and be screwed.

I got a 75G tank

The boxes are hand-made so the hole in the box is not consistent. You'll have to locate the placement yourself. If it has teeth, and the flow is about what the box is rated, the water level will be about half way up the teeth. I used two clamps to get the box where I wanted. Also, the directions will tell you how close to the edges you can drill. Good luck.

I just put the hole template right up to the rim on my 150g and it worked out great. Looks like it's about 2-3/4" from the bottom of the rim to the hole centers. There's some play in the holes on the overflow box itself once you run the bulkheads through.

Ok thanks. How about the returns? I got 1 for each side of the tank. How far down from the top should they be.?

Same here. Water level when running is just above the trim, perfect.

Keep in mind if you got one of the newer glass holes kit with a cover the template does not account for the thickness of the cover. If you put the template up against the trim you will not be able to use the overflow cover.

I got my kit in May, with the cover, and didn't have any issue? Either way, I'd definitely recommend lining it all up before drilling since it's a one time deal.

I put it up against the trim and I can get the cover on.

Should I drill the return holes up close to the trim too? Or like an inch lower then trim

you can't drill a glass tank right at the rim, it will crack. you need to go down some, how much i'm not sure. its either the diameter or radius of the hole.

with acrylic you can drill all the way up.

Drill the returns as high as you can go to prevent water from going back down when the pumps are off.

Where you want to drill for the overflow box depends on where you want your water level. I wanted mine above the trim so my box is almost to the top of the trim inside. That being said, the lid was worthless after that... I had to make my own because their lid was way too thick. If you are going to measure, do it with the lid on.

I placed my return as high as I could but observing the minimum distance from the edges as are detailed in the instructions. I also added a 1/2 in just in case. you can be a little low 'cause the locline allows for adjustment.

you have the box in hand? Unless I'm mistaken, it has holes in it that line up perfect with the template:hmm4:

Use that as a pattern on a piece of 1/4 MDF.
