Is it better to use a glass canopy on top of your tank to cut down on evap and fish jumping out or is it better to go without a glass top to reduce heat and light loss, or is there something else altogether?

I use no glass top. It is a pain to move and needs frequent cleaning to prevent salt buildup, which then diminishes the the light penatration.

Some people have had success with using chrome and white eggcrate, which actually increases light reflection in the tank. It is still a pain to remove all the time.

To prevent fish from leaping out, I use eggcrate on the back of the canopy to keep the jumpers in the tank. Granted, you must have a canopy for this to work. Do you have a canopy, or suspended lights above the tank?

But you WANT evaporation! It improves your water by gas exchange and cools your tank!

I do have a 9 inch facing board all the way around my tank to support my lights---and make jumping a truly Olympic effort.
