Glass Shop to drill Holes?

I am currently setting up a 210 gal reef, and have started to setup the sump / fuge and plumbing.

I am basically going to have a 29 gal tank as the sump, and another 30 gal high tank as the fuge.

I need to drill a 1 3/4" hole in the 30 gal tank for a 1" bulk head to run the water from it into the sump. I also need to drill a 1 3/4" hole in 29 gal tank to connect the external return pump.

I called perfecto and neither tank is tempered, so drilling shouldn’t be a problem.

My question is this, what is the best way to get holes in these tanks?

I have called about 20 local glass shops and they either won't do it, or want $20 - $30 per hole and say they are not responsible if the glass breaks.

Also, the only diamond hole saws I could find, (if I was to do it myself) are like > $100.

Is there any other way? Does anyone have a diamond hole saw they would mind lending me or giving me a hand drilling these holes? Or maybe somebody had a recommendation to a local glass shop they know can do it at a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Craig

Great, thanks. Maybe I can stop by this weekend to do it? You have a 1.75" diamond hole saw and have done this before? I'm just curious how difficult it is?

Thanks again;

Craig

Craig, I'd prefer if you could come by this afternoon. Yes I have the hole saw and I have done it before. It's not hard to do but there is always the chance the tank might break. The thicker the glass the better. If you are certain the glass is not tempered there shouldn't be any problem.

Bring them over and we can drill them.

Oh wow that was some service. Any way you could help another fellow reefer drill a tank? What do you charge?

Thanks

well Ive got a glass drill bit that u guys can borrow as well that I got on ebay for like 8 bucks shipped. Ive drilled a couple tanks myself and its not very hard to do just dont put any pressure on the drill. Let the weight of the drill make the hole. Also use a good amount of water, I used a plastic solo cup that was taped to the tank to hold water around the hole I was drilling.

Here's the deal. I'm happy to help you but, you need to be sure its not tempered glass. If it breaks its your problem. Its gonna cost you. I'll drill it and you need to donate a nice frag or fish to the clubs school tank. The frag or fish must be approved by Dean or Robert or whoever else is taking care of the tank at the next meeting. If you don't have anything to donate, I'm sure you can buy something at the auction. If thats okay with you I'm off tomorrow (tues) or I'm usually home in the mornings. The bits I have are for a standard 3/4" or 1" bulkhead.

Thanks for the offer, I hadn't heard from anyone so I decided to give beverlys a try. If it doesn't work out with them I'll send you a pm.

Thanks Andy.

Hey Armando, it didn't work out with Beverlys but luckly they gave me a credit. I'd like to try your bits as you've offered. Can you give me a call so we can hook up? Cell 305-458-5779

Thanks,

Lou
