Glass sump - edge polish needed?

I'm building a glass sump with 8mm glass, 21.5" x 21.5" x 10 3/4"
I was told by the glass guy that polishing the edges is recommended because it removes tiny fractures during cutting. Is there truth to this?

I agree with the glass guy. Polish the edges. They just run it over special belt sander. At least that's what my glass guy did

I got bevelled, looks great but completely uncalled for.
If your not going to sand the edges yourself just get them to polish it? Cut glass is sharp!

i thinking these people are confusing polished edges with ground edges...completely different things.

ground edges are basically run through a belt sander to remove the razor sharp edges...

polished edges are finished to a smooth as glass finish, generally the edges of polished glass are beveled as well...beveled edges are ground down to 45* and then polished as smooth as glass can be...

beveled and polished edges are considerably less prone to breaking since all the micro fissures and chips have been removed and polished smooth...there is obviously 0 chance of being cut by beveled polished glass as well...

the same cannot be said for ground glass edges, as the majority of the fissures and chips remain on the edges of the glass (which conveniently enough is also the weakest part of the panel) only thing usually removed by grinding the edges is the burr created when the glass is snapped to size....

personally i would not build a tank for any purpose without having the edges beveled and polished, it is safer, stronger and looks 100X better...

If you did not polish the edges you are asking to be cut. even if they are ground edges they still can have an edge to them.

Thanks for the responses.
The glass guy called the process to remove the sharp edges "Arriss"
And will charge up to $4.40 per piece for this and up to $25 per piece for polish..

Would GE 1 silicone be adequate this sump build?

No one here mentioned ground edges so I'm not sure how anyone is confusing them for something else. If you don't get polished edges or sand them yourself will eventually cut yourself, I've read enough peoples journals to learn this.
If he is going to charge an extra $25 for piece for the polish how much is the bevel? I got my glass, all beveled for $300, was about 10 pieces, cut from 3 full sheets in 5mm.

you need to further define "build".
if you mean assembling the panes together to form the sump, big no no.

to add baffles once the tank is completed, then yes.

Momentum RTV type adhesive is for constructing tanks....could also use it to add baffles, but in all reality you dont need the strenth if offers to keep the baffles in place, but wouldnt hurt end of the day.

"meh, either one. long as it doesnt cut you. aesthetics end of the day."

"i use 1000 grit wet\dry paper to knock the sharp edge off . getting cut by your sump while cleaning blows hard . "

both of those posts are referring to grinding the sharp edge off the glass, nothing to do with polishing or beveling

even your post here refers to grinding/ only sanding the edges off...
"If your not going to sand the edges yourself just get them to polish it? Cut glass is sharp! "

depending on the size of the glass (thickness) i am surprised it is only 25/piece extra as i have had quotes for as much as 7$/ft to bevel and polish

I don't know if I'm willing to pay $100+ extra to polish the glass for a 21" x 21" sump. I've cut glass myself for overflows and sumps for a coral QT and cut myself doing so. Not a big deal for me, just super glue those shut ;)

That was my plan, to construct the tank first then add the baffles. I don't have the design available right now but it's similar to this. Instead of teeth on the refugiums overflow it's an L shaped notch. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348185746.860450.jpg

He did not mention bevel in the quote, just arriss and polish.

the sharp notch in the glass will not hold up to any sort of abuse, be very careful in that area as it is a definite fracture point for the glass...really should have a much larger radius on the corner in the notch, something more along the lines of equivalent to the depth of the notch...
