Glass

Does anyone know where I could get some glass for my sump that I am building for a reasonable price in mesa? So far I've been quoted
$145
$128

For 4 sheets with flat polish edges

Didn't know if I could find it cheaper?

Are you building a tank/sump with the glass? Or are you just adding some glass baffles to a tank in order to make a sump?

I had some glass baffles cut for me recently at Russ true value in queen creek for around 15.00.

That's the same basic setup I'm using. The only difference is the height of the glass baffles.

12x17 3/8

But more or less the plan is the same

I just bought window glass from Home Depot and the tool to cut it myself and used sand paper to smooth the edges. With no experience it was not too difficult, just practice with a cheap piece to get your confidence.

I would re-consider window glass, especially in a 40 or larger. Remember the weight and pressure of water. Window glass is very thin, and easily breakable. I have heard some double it up, but I would worry about it like that, as well.

Well I'm looking in to 1/4" but I'm interested to hear what everyone uses, I don't want anything to fail

I wanted to build a 55 gallon sump for my 165 gallon tank, but, like you, found the cost of 3/8 and 1/4 too expensive for me to spend on what was going to be my first attempt at building a sump (so breakage was a real possibility from inexperience). I should also mention, I was looking in Phoenix, not Mesa.

I was asking Chris at Discount Aquarium, and he happened to have a solid 55 gallon sump there, and it was just easier and less expensive to just buy it. I was bummed that I STILL have not made my own sump for a build, but at least it was a good deal.

I wish you luck making yours, or finding a quality used one. Discount Aquarium recently abandoned us Phoenix folks, so he is fairly close to you now. He used to cut his own glass, so he might have advice or help with you on that, too.

It's a shame that 4 pieces of glass cost as much as a new sump, however I have built my own sump but it was a wet dry sump for freshwater and I didn't know any better and I used 1/4 acrylic and cut it my self. It didn't turn out to bad. Now after I read more up on Diy sump and learned that acrylic baffles to glass can fail. May not be at first, but eventually the acrylic baffles will fail cause acrylic don't bond well to glass, plus over time acrylic warps/bows. I'm going to build it right this time so if it cost me $145 for 4 sheets of glass I will. I personally find more pleasure and satisfaction from building my own stuff for the most part. I had a accident while building a stand that set me back 6 months but I've rambled on enough. But thanks for the advice I'll look into talking to Chris at discount aquariums.

I believe I used 1/8 thickness glass on my 10 gallon sump I just made and it's really strong. I understand a 40br is much larger, but I still feel it will be more than strong enough. I have a 40br sump under my 58 gallon and used acrylic to do my baffles. After about a year one of the baffles has bowed significantly. I will have to eventually rip them out and will be replacing them with glass baffles. I won't hesitate to use window glass when I do. Hope this helps good luck!

You will have to replace those acrylic baffles at one point, but I would rather do it right the first time and save some time and money and use glass baffles. Now 1/8 could possibly be thick enough for a 40 br however I would rather not risk it breaking or shattering. So I will go a little thicker just to be safe.

Chandler D and L Glassworks in downtown Chandler is who I have used in the past for my glass baffles. I've always used 1/4 inch glass and I've spent as little as $20 and as much as $50 on different sumps. I would give them a call and see what they can do for you.

Thanks I'll give them a call Monday when they own and get a price quote from them to see what they can offer me.

Thank you for the recommendation for Chandler d and l glassworks.called them got a quote if 57.04 for 4 pieces of 1/4" glass. Very much appreciated.

Kalen, you're welcome! Good luck on your project! Another tip, if I may. Take your soon to be sump down there and drop it off, they will make the panes of glass fit perfectly inside for you. I've had really great results with them doing that. Again, good luck to you.

Thanks, I just may do that.I would hate to waste money and glass to my incorrect measurements. Damn I'm so excited now everything is slowly coming together.
