Gluing A Monti Cap to...

I'm thinking about gluing a monti cap to the back wall of my acrylic tank. There's plenty of light. Will it attach itself and grow?

Thanks, Geary

I have often thought about doing this. I believe RC member Middletonmark had a cap growing off of an internal overflow box and it did fine until a predator got to it. How big is the frag ? It seems like it would be pretty tough attaching it underwater as the glue works best out of water and I do not think epoxy is an option on the glass/acrylic. You may have to drain the tank under the level you intend to put the cap to attach it. Hopefully someone with experience doing this will be able to help more.

Some times i have seen glue melt the acrylic its put onto but i dont know if it will or not you may want to be carefull though.

It's a 1.5" green monti cap. I have used the super glue gel underwater with a fair amount of success.

I definitely don't want the acrylic to melt!:eek1:

Anybody out there have experience with this?

As long as you dont go crazy on the glue, should be fine.

I had a 14"x10" cap growing in a corner of my tank for about a year. It was attached to the rock that leaned against the corner. It never really 'encrusted' to the acryllic. When I tore down the tank and sold it, it slid out perfectly and the backside was shapped perfectly like the corner that it sat on.

So basically... Make sure that the cap has something strong to support itself on. It won't encrust on the acryllic and will be incredibly fragile.

Thanks, Eric. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

I have 2 monti caps glued to my overflows both have encrusted and I doing great... I also have a friend who did the same thing and hers are HUGE now they spread a base about 7" in diameter... so it will encrust the acrylic I will try and get you a picture of mine later.

Maybe if there is coraline algae already on the acryllic. Otherwise theres nothing pourous for the skeleton to attach too. Like I said, mine came out of its nook like a jigsaw puzzle. 1 year old, 14" accross, and it broke into 5 pieces when I pulled it out.

hmmm... I see what you mean... I would imagine it would come off fairly easy if I tried to pop it off... and yes there is coraline spots near it that it could have grown over.... but it will work and has worked for me.

While diving I have seen acropora growing on surfaces such as pipes and sunken ships. Of course, acrylic is a different matter all together.

I do not know with acrylic to be honest. What I would honestly do if I had acrylic is get a magnet and glue it to the magnet. As it gets larger, you won't see the magnet and you can move it wherever you want. Just thought of that idea :)

That's a great idea! Would you use the one of the cleaner type magnets?
