gobies

I'm planning on having a DSB in my refugium where I'll grow chaeto & possible mangroves (haven't heard much about mangroves lately), but be able to change out DSB if I start to have problems. What size is your tank? Tell me about your skimmer - how you made it, what size pump, venturi or what, etc.

My tank is a 100 gallon long. My skimmer is 5' tall with a home made venturi valve which supplies tiny air bubbles at the bottom. It is run with two pumps, one pumps water into it and one re circulates the water to make the bubbles. I also use ozone in the skimmer.
It cost about $10.00 to build (without the pumps) It is a 4" PVC drainage pipe which is thinner than a regular 4" PVC pipe. The top part is an acrylic tube so I can see the bubbles. The effluent goes into a 5 gallon bucket under the unit. There is a float switch in the bucket that shuts off the pumps if it fills from effluent or if the unit leaks.
So far it only overflowed once when 25 urchins spawned. I did not have the shut off switch on it then.
There is no maintenance on it except to clean the reaction tube at the top.
I don't remember how old it is, maybe 15

I bought a tiny yellow watchman goby and only have about an inch to an inch and a half of sand. He is growing well and I don't see him sifting sand often. He loves to float around in the current in my tank, and has since day one as soon as the lights come on the is drifting.
