i saw in the petshops display tank this adorable goby. i believe he was a hi fi banded goby, anyway he was bobbing his head in and out of his tunnel and it was the funniest thing, do all gobies do this? or just a certain kind?
now about them jumping? i have an uncovered tank are the chances high that he will jump out? or is it bacically a 50-50 chance? the water is only an inch from the top but my rocks are piled right up to the water line (1/4" below) and the maxi jet looks like an easy escape to thats about 1/4" from the water line also.
since im talking about jumpers i was also wondering about brittle stars, do they crawl out?
i dont want to walk in my fish room one day and be stepping on critters
btw my tank is a 10 gallon nano, just set up last week, guess i have to wait awhile for corals etc..ooo which reminds me, my plan was inverts, corals and then fish, is this the proper order?
:)

Your order doesnt really matter

Gobies are all cave dwellers, and doesnt appear to be a jumper thou some are. You maybe able to get a pistol shrimp for it and they'll share a home.

Brittlestar is kinda big for a 10 and may move things around

I wouldn't put hermits in there either even the dwarves will get bigger to some extent.

Pastina,

My high fin, red banded gobie jumps like a rocket taking off.

I would cover that tank if you don't want him to go carpet surfing.

oh no lol that does sound pretty bad
i saw the egg crates at an online store and im wondering about if they can still get out? i mean those squares look pretty big
im considering another method of using a needlepoint mesh with the largest sized squares i can find but im worred if this will restict the amount of light that penetrates the water? i believe the bigges squares will be 1/4" or less in size, pretty tight compared to the egg crate
do they only jump at night? cause i can easily cover the tank at night, its basically looks that im worried about too lol, those egg crates are pretty ugly, sry if i offend any egg crate people

i have a yellow watchman goby w/ a pistol shrimp. i've only had them about 2 weeks, but they pretty much just stay under a rock they dug a tunnel under.

I have a hi fin red banded goby, he's never tried to jump from what I've seen. I've read they jump when they're stressed, from other fish, poor water conditions, what have you. I also have a huge pistol shrimp, but they neveer hang out.
When I first got the goby he spent alot of time hiding, but now that its figured out the no one will mess with it he spends most of his time just hovering above the rocks. It's very rare that he retreats to his caves anymore, and if he does he just pops right back out after a minute or two.

i went back to the petstore and i asked what the fish was, its not a goby, its a pearly Jawfish my bad lol
seems like they are jumpers too
anyone have this fish???
:D

I've got the pearly, dusty, and the black cap in my tank . Twice I've had to retrieve the pearly from his travels to the sump . All of my jawfish get along fine . The black cap and the dusty are 6 inchs apart and the pearly has set up in the rear corner of the tank . IMO the jawfish is a must have for a reef setup .
Thanks

I HAD one.. poor little guy.
I had him for a few weeks, he was the first fish in my tank. He did just fine, had a place dug out and everything. The next fish I added was the goby I mentioned earlier. The fish stressed out the jawfish so bad that he abandoned his home, and, after a few days of non stop spazzing around the tank, keeled over and died... The goby never attacked him or anything, just stressed him out.
It was very sad..
