goby/pistol shrimp combo

I started a thread a little bit ago about shrimp and gobies, but the search function isn't working for me right now, so I can't find the original. I decided to finally get some pictures and post them. If anyone can ID the shrimp, I would appreciate it. I thought it might be a randall's shrimp goby, but it lacks the red coloring I've seen in most pictures. Here they are in the new 92 (sorry about the cloudy look of the pics, the shrimp is constantly moving sand and stirring up the new sand). Hope you enjoy.

And a couple of other fun shots of the new tank...

Yup, yellow at the head and tail and a clear whitish color over the rest except for the two white stripes across the back.

They are very cool Brian. I just took my diamond gobi out and banished him to the sump to make as many sand storms as he wants  He was so neat to watch tunneling and scooping sand but when he decided to tunnel under a favia and my big clam knocking them over he had to go. If my sand was easier to access I would have kept him because they are way cool fish!

the way i find any of my posts that i didnt subscribe to is by going to your name on a thread and clicking your own profile, then click on search all threads by this user in your profile and it will find all of your posts. it isnt like a regular search so it usually always works. i use to just search like you were gonna do but like you said the search is always down so you cant do a username search so this is the easiest way for me now. anyways not that it matters but heres your old topic i found by doing what i sugested if you ever need to find one again.

nice pics of your tank by the way. my cam is so bad that even being crystal clear they wont show up as good as yours. did you buy the shrimp and goby as a pair or do they pair up easily?

I'll chime in on that pitbull...we got them as a pair at the Emerald Bay meeting. As soon as they hit the tank, they were together and digging... It's funny, you'll hear the shrimp snapping at the hermits and snails if they get in his way while he's bulldozing his burrow out.

Thanks moriah, ive always wanted a pair but never seen them anywhere local but we dont have alot to chose from here. Ill have to check with the critter and see if they get them in. actually I havnt ever been to emarlad bay but i want to get up there this weekend just to check it out so maybe they will have some.

Thanks for the link, I knew about the search through the profile, but it didn't occur to me at the time.

I've never seen a shrimp/goby pair at a LFS (other than the ones we bought...and they had just been brought in from someone's tank). From what I understand, they rarely collect them as pairs (probably because it's hard to do). I'm not talking you out of a trip to Emerald Bay (I routinely visit both the Critter and Ebay and think they both have different strong points) but I wouldn't get your hopes up for finding a pair.

As we stock the new tank with fish I'm going to try to get another (different) goby and try to pair it up with another shrimp. As long as you get species that are compatible with one another, I understand that they pair up pretty easily. I will find out.

Pitbull, just a heads up, don't make the trek to EBay on Sunday, they're closed. We've done that a few times since they changed their hours only to get there and realize our mistake...

Ill just have to try to pair them up myself after i do some reading . i was thinking a while back that i seen a place that sold them online already paired but there probably to high priced that way so id rather just try to get them to pair on there own. thanks for the heads up.

thanks alot for letting me know. thats when we were planning on going. I did that once here in town when they changed there hours but that wasnt a big deal since its not almost an hour away like ebay is.

brian, i cant help you id the thing but i can tell you its much different than my pair i bought from emerald bay a few weeks ago. i have a tiger pistol that looks like a tiger :) hes paired with a randall's. quit teasing with the species pics, i wanna see what you did with the depth of that 92, FTS!!!!!<~~~steve

edit: i just went to look at the shrimp in the 44 in our bedroom. apparently that loud crack that woke me up at 2 am this morning was him getting a big ole meal consisting of laurens black and white pygmy coris wrasse. she's not gonna be happy when she gets home!

also, pitbull- sean has these regualrly for about 50-70 bucks depending on the goby included. call him and he can get you a pair fast. hes had 4 pairs in the past month but they sell immediatly. i saw his fish list yesterday when ordering the mysteri but it didnt have a pair on it. im sure he could have you one by next thursday though if you wanted it. HTH

Steve- I didn't realize Sean could get them that easy... he's been getting a lot of interesting stuff, so he must be working his tail off to find good suppliers As far as a full tank shot, I have to wait until there is no more sand storm...you can't see the depth.

as sean explained it to me, he brings in things of interest even if that means they wont sell for a year. you can go to petco and buy a "nemo" :) his stock lists are insane and hes always up to order something he hasnt seen. he has a surprising stock of rare things every week the trick is getting there when its being unpacked and wrestling the 20 others there for dibs on the bags. what we usually see in the displays are whats left over. he also got lauren her xanthurus angel, not so much rare or expensive but very uncommon in this part of the country. it never hurts to give him a call and check his list. its usually monday afternoons :)<~~~steve

thanks steve, i have never been to ebay so i need to get up there and check it out anyways and ill see about getting a pair. Ive never seen them at any lfs around me but we dont have a whole lot down this way so i usually go to the critter but i need to check out ebay. does ebay have a good stock of corals ? sorry for the hijack brian...

Thanks for the ID (I had a good idea about the goby, but no clue on the shrimp). I love the randall's gobies and the Yasha Hase's. I'm definitely going to start looking into another pair.

NeveSSL - Not as far as I know... Mine grabs snacks whenever I feed the tank, but doesn't seem to pick at anything otherwise. He definitely never goes more than about 8 inches from the hole during the day (and gets buried in the hole at night) so even if it did eat some, it wouldn't hurt the population all over the tank.

That said, you'll want a good sized tank with a very healthy pod population before trying a mandarin. Unless you can get them to eat other foods (rare), you want to make sure they have enough to eat.

Right... and I plan on that. :)

I'm planning on doing my own phyto and feeding it to my tank and refugium... which will hopefully make the pods boom. We'll see, tho...
